Once again, a concert scheduled for Russian classical pianist Polina Osetinskaya was canceled when she spoke out against Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Osetinskaya postponed her September 9 engagement at a music festival in Irkutsk, Eastern Siberia, her second performance cancellation in a week.
The director of the Irkutsk musical festival, Tatyana Mezentseva, gave the media the standard justification for the cancellation of concerts by anti-war artists: the pianist was sick.
Osetinskaya quickly turned to Instagram to express her outrage over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on February 24, calling it a “sad day” in Ukraine’s history. The words “horror, shame, and contempt” came out of her mouth.
In a move reminiscent of Soviet-era restrictions on musicians, Russia has been forcing concert promoters to cancel the appearances of artists who have spoken out against the war.

According to Kommersant, Osetinskaya’s concert scheduled for September 2 in St. Petersburg was called off after the organizer was given the ultimatum of either dropping the pianist from the roster or scrapping the entire evening’s musical program.
In July, Russian media said that 37 “banned Russian artists” had been identified, all of whom were either outspoken opponents of the war or refused to endorse it publicly. Since the invasion began, 30 percent of Russian musicians have left the country or stopped performing at home, claims MTS Entertainment.
Osetinskaya, now 46 years old, started playing the piano when she was 5 years old, performed her first performance at the Vilnius Philharmonic when she was 6 and made her debut with the Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra conducted by Saulius Sondeckis when she was 8 years old.
