Meta Quest Pro, Social VR and More at Meta Connect 2022

The future is becoming more like the present. Mark Zuckerberg joined Reality Labs at Meta leaders and a few special guests at Meta Connect today to show how far we’ve come in making the metaverse a reality. We talked about Meta Quest 2’s massive success and how virtual reality is becoming more social.

We also showed off new ideas for fitness, games, and work. We also showed off Meta Quest Pro, a device that is a big step forwards in bringing the real and digital worlds closer together.

Introducing Meta Quest Pro

Today, we’re getting rid of the codename and calling the game Meta Quest Pro. This high-end headset will start shipping on October 25 for USD 1,499.99. You can pre-order your Meta Quest Pro on meta.com.

Meta Quest Pro is the first in a new line of high-tech headsets made to make virtual and mixed reality even more helpful. Its pancake lenses fold light over several times, which makes the headset smaller while making the images more explicit. The new, curved battery on the back of the Meta Quest Pro helps make the headset more ergonomic and balanced.

High-resolution cameras that face outward capture four times as many pixels as Meta Quest 2, making Meta Quest Pro the first mixed-reality device with full color. Imagine what could happen when the digital and real worlds can finally work together without you having to bend over to look at your phone.

It’s also the first headset we’ve made that has sensors facing inward to track the eyes and capture natural facial expressions. If you raise an eyebrow, smile, or look at someone, your avatar will do the same thing. All of this helps improve social presence, which is the feeling of being right there with someone no matter where you are in the world.

This is a big step towards making the metaverse live up to its promise. There’s much more to discuss, so check out our Meta Quest blog for all the details.

New Partnerships To Make Work Better In The Future

Meta Quest Pro was made with productivity in mind, and it will be a massive improvement for people who use VR for work. However, hardware is only one part of the equation. We care just as much about making software that makes your job easier as we do about helping you use it.

Mark and Microsoft Chairman and CEO Satya Nadella announced a new partnership that will bring powerful new work and productivity tools to Meta Quest Pro and Meta Quest 2 next year. These tools will include apps for Microsoft Windows 365 and Microsoft Teams and the ability to join a Teams meeting from inside Meta Horizon Workrooms.

New Ways To Be Social In Vr And Beyond

When Meta Quest 2 came out two years ago, people spent most of their time in VR alone. Now, most time is spent on social and multiplayer apps.

Today, we announced that we’re building Meta Horizon Worlds for the web so that you can eventually use your phone or laptop to visit friends hanging out in VR and vice versa. We also discussed the new social features we are making with the YouTube VR team. Soon, you and your friends can watch YouTube videos together in Meta Horizon Home.

We showed off our next generation of Meta Avatars, which will be more expressive and detailed. We also said Meta Horizon Worlds would be the first VR game to have full-body avatars. We’re adding avatars to video chat, starting with Messenger and WhatsApp, so you can express yourself and respond without having to turn your camera on. Reality Labs Research Updates

In addition to what we announced today, we also updated our research into the technologies that will form the basis of future devices and the metaverse. These technologies include:

  • Our work uses artificial intelligence and electromyography to create more intuitive, human-centered interfaces
  • Project Aria and our partnership with Carnegie Mellon University to help people with visual impairments better navigate their surroundings indoors
  • Two technologies to build and manipulate 3D objects in the metaverse: neural radiance fields and inverse rendering
  • Photorealistic Codec Avatars, including more robust facial expressions and Instant Codec Avatars that are faster and easier to make

With Reality Labs, we are making a new computing platform built around people, connections, and the relationships that matter. Please read all about our latest research at Tech at Meta.
