Dawn Brancheau was a dedicated and competent animal trainer who worked with orcas at SeaWorld Orlando for 15 years. She was well-known for her skill, personality, and passion for marine creatures.

Who was Dawn Brancheau?

Dawn Brancheau had just finished acting in the Dine with Shamu show alongside Tilikum and another orca named Trua on the day of the tragedy. She remained in a smaller pool attached to the main display pool to interact with Tilikum.

She was reclining on a platform near the pool’s edge, stroking Tilikum’s head and conversing with him. Tilikum abruptly grabbed her hair and dragged her into the water, according to eyewitnesses and camera footage.

He aggressively thrashed her around, fracturing her bones, ripping off her scalp, and causing severe internal damage. He also kept her from coming to the surface for breath, forcing her to drown.

The SeaWorld crew attempted to save her by luring Tilikum away from her body using nets, signals, and food. He, on the other hand, refused to let her go and proceeded to swim around with her in his mouth. It took around 45 minutes for them to recover her body from him. These steps, however, were insufficient to placate some critics and regulators. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) fined SeaWorld $75,000 in 2011 for three safety violations connected to Dawn Brancheau’s death.

Additionally, it issued a citation forbidding trainers from approaching orcas up close unless they are secure in a physical barrier or are at a safe distance. SeaWorld filed an appeal, claiming that the citation would jeopardize its fundamental purpose of education and conservation.

The case went through numerous rounds of litigation before a federal appeals court affirmed OSHA’s citation and dismissed SeaWorld’s appeal in 2014. The documentary film Blackfish, which showed the evil side of SeaWorld’s orca captivity and performance, was released in 2013.

Interviews with previous trainers, experts, and activists were included in the film, as well as footage of orca attacks and injuries. Tilikum’s life narrative was also highlighted in the film, from his capture in the wild to his role in three human fatalities. The film was a critical and economic success, sparking a public outcry against SeaWorld.
