Judy Balaban was born Judith Rose Balaban on October 13, 1932, in Chicago, Illinois. She was the daughter of Barney Balaban, the president of Paramount Pictures from 1936 until 1964, and Tillie Urkov Balaban. She had two brothers, jazz musician Leonard “Red” Balaban and film producer and director Burt Balaban.
Balaban studied at the University of Chicago as well as the Goodman School of Drama. She began her career as a stage actress, playing in plays such as The Music Man and The Miracle Worker. She made her cinematic debut in the comedy A Thousand Clowns in 1965.
She later appeared in films including The Graduate (1967), The Heartbreak Kid (1972), and The Goodbye Girl (1977). She has also appeared on The Twilight Zone, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, and The Bob Newhart Show.
Balaban was also a published novelist, having written The Bridesmaids: Grace Kelly and Six Intimate Friends (1990), which detailed her friendship with Grace Kelly and their experiences as bridesmaids during her 1956 wedding to Prince Rainier of Monaco. She also co-wrote an essay for Vanity Fair in 2010 on her early 1960s LSD treatment sessions with Cary Grant and his wife Betsy Drake.
Balaban had three marriages. Jay Kanter, a Hollywood agent who represented Grace Kelly, Marilyn Monroe, Marlon Brando, and Paul Newman, was her first spouse. Before divorcing in 1961, they married in 1953 and had two daughters, Victoria and Amy.
