A tech consultant was taken into custody after Cash App inventor Bob Lee was fatally stabbed in San Francisco on Thursday. Police say the suspect was acquainted with the victim but won’t comment on a potential motive.
San Francisco Police Chief Bill Scott stated during a news conference that Nima Momeni, 38, and Lee, 43, knew one another, but he chose not to comment on their relationship.
According to the news agency Associated Press, Momeni was detained early on Thursday in the San Francisco neighborhood of Emeryville and was later jailed on suspicion of murder.
Around 2:30 a.m. Pacific Time on April 4, Lee was discovered walking through the streets of San Francisco while bleeding from a stab wound. Later, at a hospital, Lee, 43, died from his injuries.
Scott declined to elaborate on how they connected Momeni to the murder. The executive also declined to discuss a potential reason.
Momeni has been charged with murder in connection with Lee’s death, according to San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins, and she is scheduled to be arraigned on Friday. She indicated the prosecution would petition the judge to deny bail.
It wasn’t immediately known if Momeni had a lawyer who could represent him. Momeni identifies himself as a “IT Consultant/Entrepreneur” and the proprietor of Expand IT on his LinkedIn profile.
Momeni is listed as the chief executive officer, secretary, and chief financial officer of Expand IT INC, which is characterized as an information technology consulting firm, in corporate filings with the state. According to AP, he signed the document in August 2022.
According to Momeni’s LinkedIn profile, he has been “a dedicated technology partner since 2005” and founded Expand IT in 2010.
Criminal records reveal that Momeni was given a misdemeanor charge in 2011 for carrying a switchblade, but the case was later dropped after he accepted a plea agreement.
Lee served as MobileCoin’s chief product officer and worked in the cryptocurrency industry. Additionally, he is credited for creating Cash App, a smartphone-based application that enables money transfers between individuals. In the US, many people use the app.
People in the US tech world paid Lee many respects following his passing. “I acknowledge and understand how the loss of a young, vibrant leader and innovator has rocked our city and even beyond,” Jenkins said at the news conference.
Tim Oliver Lee, a brother of Lee, expressed the family’s appreciation to the San Francisco Police Department for apprehending the culprit on Facebook. Tim Lee claimed that his brother had acquaintances from all walks of life and was ambitious to make technology available to everyone.

Elon Musk lashed out at San Francisco on Twitter to remember Lee by criticizing the city’s “lax attitude toward crime.” Jenkins received a tweet from Musk complaining about the “horrific” crime in San Francisco and the frequent release of attackers even after they have been apprehended.
Jenkins explicitly addressed Musk on Thursday. Mayor London Breed and other key city officials have fought back against that notion.
“I must point out that reckless and irresponsible statements like those contained in Musk tweet that assumed incorrect circumstances about Lee’s death serve to mislead the world in their perceptions of San Francisco,” Jenkins said.
SF DA Brooke Jenkins, after suspect in Bob Lee’s killing arrested:
“I must point out reckless and irresponsible statements, like those contained in Mr. Musk’s tweet that assumed incorrect circumstances of Mr. Lee’s death, mislead the world in its perception of San Francisco.”
