A Thanksgiving tradition that started with a mistaken text message is now in its seventh year. In an Instagram post on Tuesday, Jamal Hinton confirmed that he will spend Thanksgiving with Wanda Dench. In 2016, Dench thought she was texting her grandson to invite him to Thanksgiving, but she was actually texting Hinton.
“To answer all of your questions, yes, Thanksgiving is planned for the seventh year in a row. We’ll see you on Thursday.” Hinton wrote this in the photo’s caption, which showed him and Dench standing outside of a Cheesecake Factory restaurant.
In 2016, Dench, who lives in Mesa, Arizona, sent Hinton a text message inviting him to dinner. It was for her grandson, whose phone number had changed. Instead, Hinton, who was 17 at the time, was in class at Desert Vista High School when she got the message.
When they realized their mistake, they sent each other selfies. In one, Hinton asked if he could still come over. Dench sent a text message, “Of course you can. Grandmas do that—they feed everyone.” Hinton has maintained a tradition on each of his social media platforms of documenting the occasion. In 2019, he posted a snap with the caption, “Blessed to have such lovely individuals in our lives,” and included the hashtag #blessed.

Even though Dench’s husband had passed away, they continued to celebrate the holiday together. In a post from 2020, Hinton said, “This Thanksgiving, along with all the holidays coming up, aren’t going to be the same as past ones but we will make the best of it.” “We shall miss you very much, Lonnie, as well as everyone else who passed away this year. May you rest in peace. We are grateful that you are a part of our lives.”
Dench and Hinton discussed their friendship in an interview that took place in 2021 with the website azfamily.com.
Dench responded, “I would have missed out on a fantastic connection,” when she was asked what would have occurred if she hadn’t invited Hinton around all those years ago. “I would have missed out on a wonderful friendship,” “I’ve evolved quite a bit in my perspective on the younger generation, and now that I’ve thought back on all these years, I realize that I didn’t change their lives; rather, they changed mine.”
