The ancient Birkenstock sandals Steve Jobs wore and owned recently sold for more than $200,000 breaking a record for the most money ever paid for a pair of sandals at auction, according to the auction house.
The tech pioneer’s brown suede Arizona sandals which were estimated to bring in $60,000, unexpectedly fetched $218,750 when they were auctioned off this past weekend at Julien’s Auctions together with an NFT.
The sandals, which were described as “well used” but still “intact” by the Californian auction house prior to the sale were a mainstay in Jobs’ wardrobe during the 1970s and 1980s. Jobs passed away in 2011 as a result of pancreatic cancer complications.
According to the auction house’s website, “the cork and jute footbed maintains the impression of Steve Jobs’ feet, which had been molded after years of use.” According to the report, Mark Sheff, a former home manager to Steve Jobs rescued the Birkenstocks from the garbage during one of the tech icon’s numerous cleanouts.
The CEO and creator of Julien’s Auctions, Darren Julien, told CNN on Monday that Steve Jobs “changed the world not only with his groundbreaking discoveries but with his business leadership style and fashion in wearing sandals.” Jobs made history while creating the Apple computer and these popular Birkenstocks were a mainstay of the tech icon’s wardrobe.
The shoes were offered for sale in Julien’s Auctions’ “Icons and Idols: Rock ‘n’ Roll” public auction which also included items of apparel, jewelry, musical instruments, and memorabilia from artists and icons like Elvis Presley, Kurt Cobain and John Lennon.
A pair of Michael Jordan‘s Nike Air Ships broke the record for the most expensive pair of sneakers ever sold at auction when they fetched $1.47 million in October of last year.
