Sophia Smrz Obituary: A Community Grieves the Loss of a Bright Student

Sophia Smrz, 17, was killed in an automobile accident early on Friday morning as she was driving to school for swim practice. Senior year at Marshfield High School, Smrz graduated.

On September 22, 2023, at the age of seventeen, Sophia Ann Smrz (Marshfield, Wisconsin) passed away, leaving behind bereaved loved ones.

Her great-grandparents were Harold and Betty Richardson and Evangeline Hasselberger; her great-uncle Wesley Spreda and great-aunts Mary Ann Grassl, Marjorie Singer, Alice Liebe, Marilyn Hellmich, Jeanette Smrz, Eugene Smrz, Wesley Spreda, John Gaddini, and Dennis Richardson also died prior to her birth.

There will be a visitation on Sunday, October 1, 2023, from 2:00 PM to 7:00 PM, and on Tuesday, October 3, 2023, from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM. St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church (146 Main St, Milladore, WI 54454) will host a funeral service on Tuesday, October 3, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. On March 3, 2023, at 6:30 p.m., there will be a prayer service.

Who was Sophia Smrz?

Jesse and Kathryn (Richardson) Smrz gave birth to Sophia Ann Smrz on May 18, 2006, in Marshfield, Wisconsin. Her parents and sister, Olivia, raised her on a farm in Junction City, Wisconsin.

She went to Marshfield High School and succeeded both academically and athletically. She was a member of the varsity swim team, the National Honor Society, and HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America).

During high school, she received high honors and was in the top 7% of her class of over 300 pupils. She took a lot of honors and AP (Advanced Placement) subjects, passing every AP exam and obtaining the title of AP Scholar with Distinction. She was interested in biochemistry and aspired to be a doctor or surgeon.

Sophia was also interested in a variety of extracurricular activities and hobbies outside of school. She volunteered at Marshfield Medical Center on 4 North, stocking nurse carts. She was a qualified lifeguard and received certification in first aid and CPR.

She worked as a lifeguard at Vandehey Waters Outdoor Aquatic Center for the City of Marshfield. She also helped out at middle school swim events as a lifeguard and timer. She finished the Certified Nursing Assistant program in the summer of 2023 and was thinking about working as a part-time CNA at Marshfield Medical Center.

Sophia was passionate about music and art. She studied the flute and saxophone, as well as the ukulele, electric guitar, and harmonica. She loved shredding on her Stratocaster and playing Pink Floyd, Eddie Van Halen, Foo Fighters, and other artists. She was also talented, drawing figures and crocheting small objects to give as gifts to her family and friends.

Sophia adored the outdoors and animals. She loved going hunting with her family, especially with her father, grandfather, and sister. She was an expert at shooting her 308 rifles at vast distances with pinpoint accuracy. She also enjoyed hauling round bales out of the field with the loader tractor because she could rest her legs up on the arms and improve her summer tan.

Sophia was a religious woman who adored God and life. In Milladore, Wisconsin, she attended St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church. She asked for a Muslim memorial service in her honor because she learned about Islam from her friend’s family and respected their faith.

Sophia perished on Highway 10 near Auburndale, Wisconsin, on September 22, 2023, when her car collided with a semi-truck. That morning, she was on her way to school for swim practice. She was seventeen years old.

Sophia’s family, friends, students, instructors, coaches, and community mourned her death. Sophia’s visitation and celebration of life took place on October 1, 2023, at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church in Marshfield. On October 3, 2023, a Christian Burial Mass was celebrated at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Milladore. She was laid to rest in St. Wenceslaus Cemetery.

Sophia was recalled as a talented, beautiful, and compassionate person who brought many people joy and laughter.

What Really Happened to Sophia Smrz?

Sophia, a bright young student, began her day like any other, eager to get to work. However, at 5:44 a.m., a report of an automobile collision arrived at the Wood County Dispatch Center. The collision occurred at the intersection of Shady Road and County Highway Y in Auburndale.

Two cars collided at that fatal intersection, and both ended up off the road. One of the vehicles was driven by Jason Peterson, 46, of Arpin, who was traveling north on Shady Road. Sophia Smrz was driving the other vehicle on County Highway Y westbound. Sophia died at the scene, while Peterson was transferred to Marshfield Medical Center with unknown injuries.
