During his youth, Duguay competed in junior hockey for his native team, the Sudbury Wolves of the Ontario Hockey League. Subsequently, between 1977 and 1989, the former ice hockey player and coach were active in and coached in the National Hockey League (NHL). He coached in the minor divisions for the next four years.
