Robert Srfather . was a successful paint and lacquer dealer who made a fortune selling to the auto industry. His family uprooted and headed west when he was seven years old. It seemed his father had saved enough money to retire in warm and sunny Southern California. They spent nearly a year building a unique home in Bel Air, California, with views of the Bel Air Country Club.

The family dispatched Robert Jr. to California before they did. He was packed off to the Hollywood Military Academy in a train on his own. Robert Wagner Career

Robert’s professional life started in the 1950s when he started out as a background actor. His first film appearance was in “The Happy Years” from 1950, albeit it went uncredited. At age 20, he was snatched up by 20th Century Fox. A World War II picture set in 1951, “Halls of Montezuma” was his debut for Fox.

Additionally starring alongside Wagner was Richard Widmark. Later same year, he appeared in “The Frogmen,” starring alongside Widmark, in yet another supporting part. Wagner’s breakout role was as a shell-shocked soldier in the 1952 film “With a Song in My Heart,” in which he played a minor but significant role.

After a string of supporting appearances, he was cast as the lead in 1953’s “Beneath the 12-Mile Reef,” “Prince Valiant,” “A Kiss Before Dying,” and “Between Heaven and Hell,” among other films for which he gained widespread recognition. He had a starring role in the hit Western “Broken Lance” back in 1954. Paramount then borrowed Wagner to play Spencer Tracy’s brother in the 1956 film The Mountain.

Following his return to Fox, he played the lead in two critically panned and commercially unsuccessful Nicholas Ray films, Between Heaven and Hell and The True Story of Jesse James. In 1960, he hoped to revive his career by starring in “All the Fine Young Cannibals,” directed by his then-wife Natalie Wood.

Together with Wood, Wagner started Rona Productions in 1961. In 1962, Wagner directed “The War Lover,” starring Steve McQueen. When Wagner and Wood broke up, he moved to Europe and stayed there for a while.

There, he had small roles in films including “The Longest Day,” “The Condemned of Altona,” and “The Pink Panther,” the latter of which was a huge blockbuster in 1963 despite Wagner’s obscurity.

Back in the late 1960s, he played Alexander Mundy on the smash TV show “To Catch a Thief,” the first of three roles that would cement his status as a Hollywood A-lister. From 1968 through 1970, the show aired on ABC. His return to acting was marked by this Fred Astaire film in which he was nominated for an Emmy as best actor in a television series.

Wagner, in his autobiography, claimed to have had affairs with such famous performers as Joan Crawford, Elizabeth Taylor, and Joan Collins. In December of 1957, he wed Natalie Wood; they split up in 1962. In July of 1963, Wagner wed Marion Marshall, and the couple eventually welcomed a daughter, Katie. The couple split up in 1971. After Wagner and Tina Sinatra’s engagement ended in 1972, he quickly resumed his relationship with Wood and they were remarried on July 16. Courtney, their daughter, is the result of their union.

Robert purchased a 1-acre lot in the Brentwood area of Los Angeles for $220,000 in 1983. The land had previously been utilized as the site of a private mansion designed by the renowned architect Cliff May in the 1940s. Eventually, he bought the land adjacent to his and developed a sprawling 1.6-acre compound with several outbuildings, including a guest house, tennis courts, and stalls for his horses. Wagner contacted Cliff May and recruited him to revamp and enlarge the establishment.

Wager and St. John sold the building in August 2007 for $14 million. It was purchased by the Edlunds, a married couple consisting of Oscar-winning cinematographer Richard Edlund and Japanese video game heiress Rita Hogan. However, Richard and Rita never actually moved into the property, and it remained empty for over a decade. Rita passed away in 2019, sadly. The Wagner-St. John mansion sold in January 2021 for $11 million.
