On September 18, 2020, Pamela Hutchinson, a vocalist with the venerable R&B group The Emotions, passed away. She was 61-year-old age. The group’s official Facebook page broke the news. Only “health issues that she’d been facing for several years” were given as the reason for her death.
The statement on the Facebook page reads:
“In loving memory, we are saddened to announce the passing of our sister, Pamela Rose Hutchinson, on Friday, September 18, 2020,”
“Pam succumbed to health challenges that she’d been battling for several years. Now our beautiful sister will sing amongst the angels in heaven in perfect peace. During this time, the family kindly asks for fans and friends to respect our privacy,”
“We appreciate all kind words, photos, and videos you may want to post for our beloved Pamela and of course your loving prayers. A life so beautifully lived deserves to be beautifully remembered. We love you, Pamela!”
The girl group that won a Grammy is from Chicago, Illinois. The band initially performed religious music but subsequently switched to R&B and disco. Over the years, The Emotions have had various members, starting with the sisters Wanda, Sheila, and Jeanette. Pamela, the eldest sister, joined the group for the recording of “Rejoice” in 1977.
The Emotions, which VH1 listed as one of the 18 most critical female groups of all time, are most known for their 1977 single “Best of My Love,” written and produced by Maurice White, the brilliant mind behind Earth, Wind, and Fire.
The song was a tremendous hit in the country, topping the Billboard Hot 100 chart for five weeks without a break and peaking at number one on the R&B Singles Chart. The trio earned a Grammy and an American Music Award for the hit song, which acquired a platinum rating from the RIAA.
The Emotions appeared on Earth, Wind, and Fire’s massively popular “Boogie Wonderland” two years later. Numerous artists, including Mariah Carey, LL Cool J, Tupac Shakur, Toni Braxton, Kanye West, and Janet Jackson, to mention a few, have sampled them.
