Nona Gaprindashvili Sues Netflix For Her Portrayal of ‘Queen’s Gambit.’

Nona Gaprindashvili is the icon of chess highly regarded in Georgia. On Friday, her lawsuit against the entertainment giant was declared, based on the alleged false suggestion that the Georgian chess legend never played competitive chess against men.

This Thursday, Nona Gaprindashvili filed a $ 5 million defamation lawsuit against Netflix, alleging that her portrayal on the hit television show, known as ‘The Queen’s Gambit,’ was “sexist and disparaging.”

A copy of the lawsuit filed on Friday, formally filed Thursday in a California court, accusing Netflix, the online audiovisual entertainment giant, of distorting Gaprindashvili’s achievements in the fictional series.

Nona Gaprindashvili stated that the show falsely suggested that the former women’s world champion never played competitive chess with men and claims that Gaprindashvili, the now 80-year-old woman, competed against dozens of the best male players, beating 28 of them.

The lawsuit clearly states that: “Netflix blatantly and deliberately lied about Gaprindashvili’s accomplishments.”

Additionally, the lawsuit reads: “The accusation that Gaprindashvili ‘has never faced men’ is manifestly false, in addition to being tremendously sexist and disparaging. Adding more insults to her injuries, Netflix described Gaprindashvili as Russian, despite knowing that she was Georgian. “

On the other hand, the Netflix media representative stated that they have “only the utmost respect for Ms. Gaprindashvili and her illustrious career, but we believe this statement is without merit and will vigorously defend the case.”

Nona Gaprindashvili was born in the western town of Zugdidi in Georgia in 1941, and she has been playing chess since she was three years old. One of her achievements was winning the women’s world chess championship when she was only 20 years old, and she successfully defended her title for four years in a row.

However, she lost her crown as chess queen to another Georgian known as Maia Chiburdanidze in 1978, who was 17 years old at the time. Later that year, she became the first woman to receive the title of grandmaster from FIDE.
