The Weston Fire Department has reported that a complete mutual aid response was dispatched to the 800 block of South Street close to the Weston/Waltham boundary in response to an incident designated as involving several casualties. Numerous ambulances among the emergency vehicles queued up along the streets, which caused a portion of the traffic to be closed off.
Several hours after the collision, a spokesperson for Brandeis University issued a statement in which they stated that school officials had been informed that 27 people, the majority of whom were Brandeis students, were taken to area hospitals and that one person later passed away as a result of their injuries. There was no instant update available on the condition of any other people.
Julie Jette, assistant vice president of Communications at the institution, noted that the authorities had not confirmed the identity of the person who had passed away. Jette claims that the shuttle bus had been hired by Brandeis and was on its way back to campus from a route between Cambridge and Boston when it was involved in an accident on South Street at approximately 10:45 p.m.
According to what Jette indicated, the students, instructors, and staff have all been informed about what occurred. She said that the university is offering counselling and support services and that they will be doing so in the coming days.
Earlier, the fire chief of Weston was quoted as saying to a team on the scene that at least a dozen individuals were injured. The huge bus, which was carrying an undetermined number of passengers, was being driven by the fire department’s chief. The authorities did not disclose any specifics regarding the cause of the collision.
A severely damaged bus was shown on video near a pole in a residential area. Debris was scattered across the route, and many first responders, including firefighters from Waltham, Weston, and Newton, could be seen working at the incident.
The front end of the bus, which appeared to have the most significant damage, seemed to have collided with a tree. The bus came to a stop near the sign for the Watermill Center, which is a six-story office structure located on South Street. Crowds of people had gathered just outside the yellow police tape cutting off the active scene when it was reported that some passengers were also spotted being transported away on stretchers.
“I was inside, and I heard a big crash and bang, and at first I wasn’t alarmed because there are big trucks that go over a lot, but then I heard glass breaking, and so I came out, and I saw all the trucks… people on the side of the road that was very hurt,” said Meghan Jacobs. They just moved into the house across the street two weeks ago. “I saw all the trucks… people on the side of the road that was very hurt,” said Meghan Jacobs, who had just moved
“There was a significant amount of blood, and it was clear that many people were injured,” she continued. “It comes as a complete and utter surprise; obviously, this was not anticipated. It’s terrible, and I can only pray for everyone affected by it.”
Jacobs commented that it appeared to him as though a large number of college students were riding the bus. The location of the bus accident is only about a half mile from where Brandeis University is situated in Waltham.
“It’s very horrible, and I feel bad,” she continued to say after that.
Joseph’s Transportation, based in Medford, Massachusetts, owns the bus. In an effort to obtain feedback on this matter, has gone out to the transportation company, the Middles*x County District Attorney’s Office, and Brandeis. No more information could be obtained right away on Saturday night.
