John Rzeznik is an American singer-songwriter, guitarist, and record producer who is best known as the band’s founder and main vocalist.

He grew up in a working-class neighborhood in a strict Catholic household. Corpus Christi Grammar School and McKinley Vocational High School were his schools of choice.
When Rzeznik was younger, bands like The Rolling Stones, The Clash, The Ramones, and The Replacements were influences on him. When he was ten years old, he received a guitar as a gift from his older sisters and began learning to play it.
He also sang in the church choir and performed in a number of bands with his pals. Rzeznik had a slew of catastrophes as a teenager. His father died at the age of 15 from a diabetic coma, and his mother died at the age of 16 from a heart attack.
He was then nurtured with the support of Social Security checks by his four sisters and cousin, John Guljas. When he was 17, he moved out of his family home and rented his own apartment.

Goo Goo Dolls
Rzeznik co-founded the Goo Goo Dolls with Robby Takac, a friend and former bandmate from The Beaumonts, in 1985. They initially performed punk rock songs influenced by groups like The Replacements and Hüsker Dü. They signed with Celluloid Records, a small independent label, and released their self-titled debut album in 1987.
Over the next few albums, the band progressively moved to a more mainstream alternative rock style, with Rzeznik replacing Takac as the principal songwriter and singer.
They have switched labels a few times, from Celluloid to Metal Blade Records to Warner Bros. Records. Their first commercial success came with their fifth album, A Boy Named Goo (1995), which included their breakout single “Name”.
The song peaked at number five on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, propelling them to prominence as one of the most successful bands of the mid-1990s. Dizzy Up the Girl (1998), the band’s sixth album, sold over six million copies in the United States and yielded four top ten singles: “Iris”, “Slide”, “Black Balloon”, and “Broadway”.
“Iris” was particularly successful, appearing on the soundtrack of the 1998 film City of Angels and remaining at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 Airplay list for 18 weeks.
