Dave Grohl tears up at the memorial event for late rock great drummer Taylor Hawkins, with whom he had played in a band for many years and had been a close friend.

Celebrities such as Dave Chappelle, Elton John, Jason Sudeikis, Liam Gallagher, Paul McCartney, and more came out on Saturday to honor the life of the late drummer for Foo Fighters. They passed away suddenly in Colombia earlier this year.

Grohl, 53, gave an impassioned statement to kick off the star-studded concert at London’s Wembley Arena in honor of Hawkins.

“Ladies and gentlemen, tonight we’ve gathered here to commemorate the life, the music, and the love of our dear friend, our bandmate, our brother Taylor Hawkins,” he said in a video posted to YouTube. “Those of you who were fortunate enough to call him a friend know that no one else could make you feel as happy as he could. Those of you who have only seen him in passing and admired him probably think the same thing.”

So tonight, we’ve assembled his family and his closest friends, his musical heroes and biggest inspirations to deliver you a gigantic f—-ing night for a massive f—-ing guy,” Grohl concluded.

“Sing it out to the tune of a dance. And have a good time doing it! I suggest we all just cry and shout until he hears us right this second. “A further comment was made by him. “You see, here’s the thing: You realize this will be a long night, right? A question: are you prepared?”

Gallagher, filling in for his late bandmate, played drums during a performance of “Live Forever,” one of Oasis’s most popular songs. Towards the end of the event, when Grohl approached the stage to perform “Times Like These,” an early classic by his band, he broke down in tears in the middle of the song.

Hawkins died on March 25 after complaining of chest symptoms in his hotel room, just hours before he was set to play at a music festival in Bogotá, Colombia.

Initial results from a urine toxicology test revealed the presence of ten different chemicals, including THC, tricyclic antidepressants, benzodiazepines, and opioids, as reported by the Colombian Attorney General’s Office. He had reached the age of fifty.

Hawkins and Dave Grohl’s bond extended beyond their shared love of music. Hawkins referred to Grohl as his “f—in’ life partner” in a recent interview.

In his biography The Storyteller, Grohl wrote of the drummer, calling him “my brother from another mother, my dearest buddy, a man for whom I would take a bullet.”

“Our connection was instantaneous after we met, and it deepened with each passing day, song, and note we shared. I don’t mind proclaiming that our serendipitous encounter was akin to love at first sight, sparking a musical “twin flame” that is still burning strong to this day “… he put pen to paper. We are now an unbeatable team, ready to take on any challenge in our path.

He said, “We are meant to be, and I am delighted that we discovered each other in this lifetime. The show on Saturday is the first of two memorial concerts planned for Hawkins. The second function will occur on September 27 at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles.
