Big Little Lies Season 2 Ending Explained: The HBO series’ primary plotlines, including the lie the Monterey Five told following the thrilling season 1 climax, are resolved in the Big Little Lies season 2 finale. Big Little Lies was initially intended to be a one-off limited series, but after the first season’s success, HBO decided to give it a second season.
The outstanding A-list ensemble of Big Little Lies returned for season two and improved even further. Meryl Streep joined Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, Laura Dern, Shailene Woodley, and Zo Kravitz in the popular HBO series. Perry’s mother, Mary Louise Wright, who was killed in the season 1 finale, was portrayed by Streep as Mary Louise Wright.
Season 2 of Big Little Lies focuses on Mary Louise’s search for the truth, her desire to separate from Celeste and take her children, and the effects of Perry’s murder and the Monterey Five’s decision to tell a lie. All those plot lines are resolved in the “I Want To Know” episode of the Big Little Lies season 2 finale.
Big Little Lies Season 2 Ending Explained
The courtroom trial for Celeste’s children’s custody takes up most of Big Little Lies’ second season finale. Continuing from the last episode’s cliffhanger, Mary Louise is forced to take the stand while Celeste interrogates her about her past.

As explosive as you might think, Nicole Kidman and Meryl Streep sparring in a courtroom resulted in some shocking revelations. The death of Raymond, Perry’s brother, who perished in some accident but no information was given, has been one of season 2’s primary mysteries.
When Celeste questions Mary Louise about what happened to Raymond in “I Want To Know,” that situation shifts. It is revealed that he was killed in a car accident. Still, Mary Louise was also partially at fault because she was operating the vehicle at the time and lost her temper, which contributed to the collision.
Celeste adds that Mary Louise became aggressive with Perry as a result of blaming Perry for causing her to become distracted. The trial comes to an abrupt halt when Celeste, in the meantime, plays a video of Perry abusing her that her sons recorded. Ultimately, Celeste receives exclusive custody of Max and Josh, and Mary Louise departs the area.
There was no way she could stay in Monterey now that she had to accept that not only was her son abusive but that she had also contributed to his development in that direction. While Celeste still has work to do and probably won’t stop her therapy, this is a significant advancement, as Big Little Lies does throughout its season 2 finale.
Big Little Lies Gives Its Characters Mostly Happy Endings
Along with the conflict between Celeste and Mary Louise, the Big Little Lies finale also wraps up the major storylines for the other characters, most of which center on their romantic relationships: will Madeline and Ed succeed? Can Jane be vulnerable with Corey? What will happen to Gordon and Renata? Will Bonnie murder her mother before deserting Nathan?
The climax of Big Little Lies provides its main characters with nearly everything they could desire. Instead of starting over with a fresh slate and renewed faith in their marriage, Madeline and Ed choose to reaffirm their wedding vows. Meanwhile, Ziggy encourages Jane to date Corey, which she does after trusting him.
They have clear-cut happy endings, which Renata and Bonnie don’t exactly have, but they provide them some comfort. When Renata learns that Gordon gets to keep his train collection and other toys while she loses everything, she loses it. She uses a baseball bat to bash up the train set in a scene from Big Little Lies season 2 that has already become one of the show’s most significant and finest memes.
For Renata, it’s a funny moment of catharsis that ends their relationship and paves the way for her to go on. Bonnie loses her mother, but not through murder. Instead, she finds the strength to accept responsibility for the years of abuse and terminates her union with Nathan.
Although it isn’t as joyful, Bonnie’s ability to find forgiveness and rid herself of the guilt she feels helps her find the peace she has been unable to see all year. Bonnie has struggled with her actions. Before this, she was drowning, but after the Big Little Lies season 2 finale, she can breathe again.
The Monterey Five Decide To Reveal The Truth
Despite the impression that the Monterey 5 receive some closure and even a chance at happiness in the Big Little Lies season 2 finale, the episode concludes with Celeste, Madeline, Renata, Jane, and Bonnie reuniting and entering the Monterey police station.
The implication is clear: they’re finally going to disclose the truth about what happened on trivia night, even though we don’t see what occurs next. This is hinted at in “I Want To Know” when Madeline tells Celeste that “the lie is the friendship.”
The death of Perry brought the five women together, and the lie about it kept them there, even though Madeline was already friends with Celeste and Jane. That’s been crumbling throughout the season, and if they ever genuinely want to move on, they have no choice but to relieve themselves of the weight.
Detective Quinlan was confident that one of the Monterey Five would eventually fall, but they planned to come clean jointly and on their terms. This contributes to the sense of closure and calms that the Monterey Five hopes to have due to the Big Little Lies finale, even if there will probably be some significant aftereffects.
What Happens Next For Big Little Lies’ Monterey Five?
The Monterey Five are mainly happy in the Big Little Lies season 2 finale, but the HBO series’ conclusion adds much more complexity. While it’s fantastic for their sense of inner peace and their friendships that Celeste, Madeline, Renata, Jane, and Bonnie are all letting go of the deception (and accompanying guilt), it’s likely to have some dire consequences.
In advance of the Big Little Lies season 2 finale, Time consulted legal experts on the issue and learned that, although Bonnie may be charged with involuntary manslaughter, there’s a good possibility she wouldn’t be found guilty because she was defending Celeste.
All five of them, however, might be charged with manslaughter, obstruction of justice, suppression of evidence, and “aiding and abetting” the crime. If the Monterey Five are found guilty of the remaining two charges, they may face jail terms of five years and one year, respectively.

However, it’s also possible that they could receive probation and community service instead. The question of whether or not we will ever learn what happened to the Monterey Five is another. Big Little Lies has not received a season 3 renewal from HBO, and there are few signs that it will.
Casey Bloys, the head of programming at HBO, told TV Line that “Due to the cast’s commitments, it was deemed “not realistic,” and Kidman agreed, telling Variety: “I believe it would just be hard to get the full bunch together… But we’d like to.”
However, the first season of Big Little Lies received the same criticism. Big Little Lies season 3 may air if HBO and the cast are committed to making it happen. If not, the conclusion of Season 2 of Big Little Lies is an excellent place to end the story.
