This week, Philadelphia hit the tragic milestone of 500 homicides, which comes at a time when government authorities are concerned about how to respond to the violent crime that is taking place on city streets.
Despite the significant milestone, the number of homicides committed in 2022 is, according to the data collected by the police, slightly fewer than in 2021. Five hundred sixty-two people were killed in the city in 2021. The number of homicides in the city is at an all-time high this year, surpassing even the total for the previous year by a wide margin.
During a press conference held on Monday, Mayor Jim Kenney stated that as of that day, 500 people’s lives had been cut short due to the senseless violence that occurred in the city. “That’s 500 of our friends, neighbors, coworkers, and family members. As we move into the holiday season, I can’t help but reflect on all of the wonderful potentials that have been snuffed out due to this loss of life. I can’t help but think about it.”
Since 2016, when 268 individuals were killed in Philadelphia, the city has seen a steady increase in homicides. This year’s murder statistic was released just one day after the Philadelphia District Attorney’s office announced the arrests of multiple gang members engaged in gun trafficking, shootings, and killings related to a mass shooting that occurred on July 4, 2021, and the murder of a 15-year-old boy that occurred several months earlier.
The city has made several attempts to reduce the amount of gun violence in its population. After Kenney signed an executive order, a judge stopped the city from enforcing a prohibition on weapons in its parks, playgrounds, and other recreational facilities in October.

State lawmakers have taken the unprecedented step of impeaching District Attorney Larry Krasner over the violence in Philadelphia as a response to the city’s ongoing crime problem, which has drawn the attention of state lawmakers. His progressive policies have been regarded as part of a pattern that encourages criminals, which has led to criticism.
Krasner was found guilty of obstruction of a house committee investigation and misbehavior in office, which led to his impeachment by the state House, which voted 107 to 85. Krasner saw the impeachment process as a partisan power grab headed by the Republicans.
