DENVER — The metro Denver area’s fire departments are getting ready to respond to calls to 911 tied to ruptured pipes. After a severe freeze, when the weather finally begins to warm up, homeowners face various challenges.
On Thursday, the bitter cold will continue in Denver, with the high temperature for the day being below zero. Readings will be even lower than they were earlier on Thursday night. The middle teens are forecasted for Friday, followed by a rapid warming trend that will push temperatures to roughly 50 degrees by Christmas Day.
“When the temps start to warm up sufficiently, the pipes begin to thaw, and that’s when people discover the water leaks,” said Eric Hurst, a spokesperson with South Metro Fire Rescue. “This is the time of year when people discover the water leaks.” Hurst is due any day now. The fire department will have a lot to do on Saturday.
“They are witnessing it flooding, and they are not sure where it is coming from, and they don’t know where the water shut-off valve is,” he added. “They do not know where the water shut-off valve is.” When Hurst mentioned that a family had flooded their basement floor, an entire street descended into chaos.
“When the firefighters arrived at the stairwell in the kitchen and peered down in the basement, the water was already up nearly to the first level,” he added. “When the firefighters got to the stairway in the kitchen.” The following are some recommendations made by Denver Water to help avoid creating such a giant mess:
- Learn the location of the home’s water shut-off valve. In most single-family homes, the valve is in the basement or crawl space, on a wall facing the street.
- Open cabinet doors leading to exposed pipes (such as access doors for sinks).
- Keep attached garage doors shut.
- Crack a faucet farthest from the place where water enters the house
- Keep the thermostat set above 65 degrees

If you think a pipe is frozen, don’t wait. Denver Water said to thaw it as soon as possible or call a plumber. You can point a hair dryer at the snowy area of the pipe. A blow torch is not an appropriate option.
