Katie and Tom’s Breakup: What Was Said About It in “Vanderpump Rules Season 10” Premiere?

Katie Maloney and Tom Schwartz surprised everyone when they said they were getting a divorce in March 2022.

The cast members of Vanderpump Rules posted separate messages on their own Instagram pages about the end of their marriage, how much they still admire each other, and how they want to stay friends.

As the Season 10 trailer showed, their friendly divorce could turn bad because Tom kissed Raquel Leviss, who was in their group of friends.

Katie asked Tom for a divorce in the winter of 2022 after “a lot of issues.” At the beginning of the first episode of Season 10, the former SUR waitress and the owner of the Tom Tom part talked about the divorce.

Tom already said in Winter House Season 2 that Katie was the one who ended the marriage. Katie said in the first few seconds of the Season 10 premiere –

“After 12 years together and 5 years of marriage, I went to Tom last winter and asked him for a divorce.”

Tom was surprised by Katie’s request, even though he knew he hadn’t been the best husband. He explained it in his own interview –

“I felt like my whole world, everything I know, just sort of dissipated in that moment, you know?” 

“We’ve had a lot of issues. I’ve never been a priority to him.”

“I didn’t know how to make [Katie] happy.”

Katie told Tom some of the reasons why she wanted a divorce after she asked him for one. Tom said –

“She laid it all out, and it made perfect sense. I can’t probably give you the specifics, because I was so upset, I wasn’t really listening.” 

“But also, I don’t want to ask her again, because one of the reasons she broke up with me was because I’m not a good listener.”

“Long story short, I just didn’t know how to make her happy.”

The former partners agreed not to date anyone in the Vanderpump Rules group of friends. Tom and Katie decided to end their romantic relationship, but they still wanted to be in each other’s lives after they got divorced.

When Season 10 started, the former couples were still hanging out with each other and the rest of the cast. Katie explained in an interview –

“I really value my friendship with Tom, and I want to remain friends.”

“But there’s just one rule: Don’t hook up with anyone in the friend group.”

Even though Tom and Katie thought they could stay friends, some of their other castmates were not as sure. Ariana Madix joked –

“If one of my exes even tried to call me Bubba, I would call the cops.”

If the kiss Tom shared with Raquel in the teaser trailer is any indication of what the rest of the season will be like, his friendship with Katie might not last long.

The first episode of Vanderpump Rules will air on Bravo on February 8 at 9/8c and on Peacock and the Bravo app the next day at the same time.
