Sean Payton has been one of the NFL’s most successful coaches since the New Orleans Saints hired him as head coach in 2006. He has led the Saints to eight trips to the playoffs and six NFC South titles. In 2009, the Saints won their first World Championship with a 31-17 win over the Indianapolis Colts in Super Bowl XLIV.

Payton is the 26th-winningest NFL head coach of all time, with 139 regular season and postseason wins. He has a 139-84 (623), including eight postseason wins. Before he got there, the team had only won one playoff game. Payton has the team’s most wins and the highest percentage of wins. Teams led by Payton have won six division titles, had eight seasons with ten or more wins, and won the NFC’s top spot twice.

Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network said earlier this year that Payton is stepping down as head coach of the Saints. This led to many questions, one of which was, Was Sean Payton fired? In this post, we’ll tell you everything you need to know about where the famous coach went and what he’s doing now.

In contrast to most athletes competing in professional sports, Sean Payton chose to end his career according to his terms. To clear up any confusion that may still exist, Sean Payton did not voluntarily step down from his position; instead, he was terminated from his employment.

The head coach of the Saints, Sean Payton, announced his retirement at a press conference in January. Payton did not step down due to an illness or a poor record; instead, he stated that “it was time.” Payton expressed his thoughts by saying, “I felt like it was time maybe moving into training camp.” I believed that this was my opportunity at this very moment.

Payton joined the Saints in 2006, one year after Hurricane Katrina, leading them to their first Super Bowl victory in 2009. During his time with the Saints, Payton played for 15 seasons. As the head coach of the Saints, he has had an overall record of 152-89 wins and losses.

This last season was, by far, Sean Payton’s most challenging one. A multitude of injuries, particularly ones sustained by the team’s top two quarterbacks, led to the demise of a talented team, which finished with a record of 9-8 and was eliminated from playoff contention.

Payton maintained that his reasons for retirement were far more personal, even though the previous season had been difficult. While serving as head coach in the NFL, Payton said, “You have to make a lot of sacrifices.” I saw it as an opportunity to better my physical condition, spend more time with my children, and travel more. I also wanted to spend more time with them.

Payton did mention the possibility that he will continue his career as a coach in the future. A statement made by the former Saints head coach, who is now retired, indicates that coaching may be “where (his) heart is) in the future,” but that it is “not where (his) heart is” at this time. In addition, he brought up the possibility of a future in television. He added that although he hasn’t approached any networks about it yet, he has discussed the concept with Drew Brees and is excited about the possibility of doing so.

Payton stated that “retirement” is not the appropriate word in today’s society. Although I have no idea what will happen after this, I don’t think it will be a problem.

What Is Sean Payton Doing Now?

This offseason, Sean Payton, the coach of the New Orleans Saints, quit coaching on the spot to take a year off and try to get a job in TV. Coach Payton will work for Fox as an analyst during the NFL season of 2022.

Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald heard from a source who didn’t want to be named that Payton might be interested in the Miami Dolphins, the Dallas Cowboys, and the Los Angeles Chargers in 2023. The source says that “among other teams” is also on this list.

Barry Jackson says that for Payton, the most important things are “warm weather, a team that can compete, and the ability to make personnel decisions.” Payton has also been linked to the Carolina Panthers, but the Saints are unlikely to trade him to a team in the same division.

“Do I think I’ll end up getting back? Sure,” Payton said. “I can’t say for sure who that club is. On average, about six jobs open up every year. If there is a right fit somewhere, it will depend on several factors in the end.”

For now, Payton lives a low-stress life in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, where he plays golf, goes hiking, and goes boating. He will work on both Fox NFL Sunday and Fox NFL Kickoff, which are NFL pregame shows on Fox Sports. He will switch weeks with former coach Jimmy Johnson on Fox NFL Sunday, but he will be on Fox NFL Kickoff every week.

“I’m excited to work with Fox and the crew,” Payton said. “It’s going to be a great journey. I can’t wait until this is all over.”
