The first season of the Canadian medical drama Transplant began on NBC in September 2020 and is now airing on Netflix. Bringing the show to American audiences was a part of the network’s strategy to fill in the COVID-19-shaped gaps in its autumn programming slate this year (via Deadline).
However, the series was a huge success both inside and outside of its own nation. Before the first episode of the series aired in the United States, the series’ original network, CTV, had already ordered a second season. After producing strong ratings during its first season on NBC, they decided to replicate the success on CBS (via The Hollywood Reporter).
Transplant Season 2 Overview
Transplant series offers a fresh and relevant take on the standard hospital-set evening soap formula with a new and timely twist. Dr. Bashir Hamed (Hamza Haq), also known as Bash to his friends and coworkers, is a Syrian refugee who currently resides in Canada. Bash is initially unable to obtain employment as a doctor in Canada due to the fact that he does not possess Canadian qualifications. His perception of himself shifts as his quick thinking and resourceful knowledge enable him to rescue the lives of many people following a terrifying accident.
Dr. Jed Bishop (John Hannah), the chief of the emergency department of Toronto’s York Memorial Hospital, is one of those people whose lives are threatened. As a result of witnessing firsthand how excellent Bash is as a doctor, Dr. Bishop hires him as a resident at the hospital.
What direction will Bash’s tale go in season 2? Is there anyone who will be returning to York Memorial for another shift? And when can fans in the United States expect to watch additional episodes of this riveting drama? Listed below is all we know thus far regarding the second transplant season.
Transplant Season 2 Release Date
A report by Deadline claims that season 2 of the Transplant television series has already begun filming, but that it is not likely to broadcast in Canada until later in the same year. Considering that the first season’s Canadian premiere took place in February 2020, it implies that the series’ launch date will be pushed back substantially from its initial release date. What will this entail for the company’s future launch in the United States?
At the time of this writing, NBC has not announced a date for the series’ launch in the United States. Given the fact that the Canadian premiere has been postponed, it is probable that the same will be true for the United States release date as well. According to a press statement issued by CTV, the show’s second season will consist of 13 episodes, much as the first. NBC could easily introduce the show in 2022 at the mid-season television season, rather than at the start of the fall/winter television season, as a result of these considerations.
While it’s possible that season 2 of Transplant will premiere in the autumn of 2021, don’t be shocked if it premieres in the spring of 2022. It’s important to note that until NBC issues an official statement, all of this is just guesswork.
Transplant Season 2 Cast
The main cast of Transplant is returning for a second season, which should please fans who fell in love with the show’s characters throughout the first season. Per CTV’s press announcement, Dr. Hamed will once again be played by Haq along with Laurence Leboeuf, Ayisha Issa, Sirena Gulamgaus, Dr. June Curtis, and Jim Watson, among others, as well.
We’ll be keeping an eye on Hannah to see if he’s still a part of the cast for the full second season. However, he recovered consciousness throughout the episode and is not quite out of the woods, as the first season finished with his character having an apparent stroke. While Hannah has been classified as a series regular for season 2, it’s not unheard of for a TV medical drama to have a character die suddenly.
Additionally, Torri Higginson, who plays Claire Malone, will be promoted from guest star to series regular for season 2’s premiere (via Deadline).

Transplant Season 2 Expectation
Season 1 of Transplant left fans with many unanswered issues, so it’s a good thing that season 2 is on its way. The immediate concern is the impact Dr. Bishop’s suspected stroke will have on the York Memorial team and patients. According to a CTV news release, the incident has “destabilized” affairs at the hospital. Several new emergency room employees are also mentioned in the press release, and we can only assume they’ll bring more drama to the table.
The identity of the mystery lady Bash and his sister Amira witnessed at the conclusion of the finale of season 1 remains a major unresolved issue. Even while she’s clearly an important part of their life, it’s unclear exactly who she is or how her presence will alter things for the Hameds.
Meanwhile, fans of Bash and Mags (Bags? Mash?) are eager to see if the two will finally take the leap and establish a Grey’s Anatomy-style hospital romance. Even when the season came to a conclusion, neither of them took the next step and made an official move in their flirtation. When it comes to season 2, you may anticipate the possibility of a relationship between these two characters to play a role.
Based on what we know so far about the impending second season of Transplant, the wait will be well worth it.
