On March 6, 1972, Shaquille O’Neal was born in Newark, New Jersey, to parents Lucille O’Neal and Joe Toney. While O’Neal was still a young child, his father, a drug addict, was incarcerated for possession of illegal substances. The father left soon after Shaq was born, after being released from jail, and the mother never remarried.
