One of California’s Oldest Taco Bell Locations Closes

After 54 years of operation, one of California’s Taco Bell locations is closing according to an Orange County Register report.

One of the long-standing locations, the Laguna Beach restaurant, designed with the fast-food chain’s original stucco and tile roof resembling a Spanish Mission house located in 669 South Coast first opened in 1967. The original lease for the location signed by Glen Bell, Taco Bell founder, in 1966 has expired and will not be renewed by the landlord, according to Fast Food Maven. Fast Food Maven added that a smaller California-based Mexican food chain, Taco Stand, is expected to take the place.

Steve Smith, the franchise owner, posted his “thank you” to all the loyal customers throughout the 54 years of the fast-food operation. He even mentioned in his previous interview with OC Register during the restaurant’s 50th anniversary that this branch in Laguna Beach was his favorite.

“I like it because it’s the community Taco Bell,” he shared with the OC Register. “In big cities, you have numerous locations and don’t have the loyalty to one location. If you live and work in Laguna Beach, this is your Taco Bell.”

Even then, Smith was already concerned with the restaurant’s direction after the expiry of the lease.

According to Smith, “What would be sad is that Laguna Beach would not have a place to get quick food at a reasonable price for students, local employees, and tourists.”
