After Making Comments About Patients In The Tiktok “Icks” Trend, Nurses In Atlanta Were Fired

After making a video on TikTok that went viral and shared their “picks” about expectant mothers and their families, four labor and delivery nurses in Atlanta were terminated from their jobs. In December, several labor and delivery nurses working at the hospital affiliated with Emory University uploaded a TikTok in which they talked about their patients’ “icks.”

One of the nurses responded by saying, “My ick is when you come in for your induction and talk about ‘can I take a shower, can I eat?'” Another nurse continued by saying, “My ick is when you ask me how much the baby weighs and it’s still in your hands.”

The video footage, which has since been removed, sparked the fury of a large number of readers, with one user writing in response to a re-upload of the article, “my ick is unethical experts.” Another reader continued by saying, “My ick is knowing health care experts are judging you when you’re going through a horrific and beautiful experience,” and I quote: “My ick is knowing health care professionals are judging you.”

In response to the outrage, the personnel at Emory Healthcare terminated the nurses’ employment and stated to the public on December 8 that addressed the matter. “We are aware of a video that was posted on TikTok that included statements that were both disrespectful and inappropriate concerning maternity patients who were treated at Emory University Hospital Midtown. They stated, “We have looked into the matter, and we have taken proper actions with the former workers who are responsible for the video.”

This video in no way reflects our dedication to providing care that is centered on the patient and their family, and it also falls well short of the principles and standards that we anticipate each member of our team to uphold and exemplify.

“Our patients should never, ever, under any circumstances, have the impression that they are not being handled with care and respect. Every patient who comes to Emory Healthcare deserves to be cared for by a team that is compassionate, competent, and knowledgeable in an atmosphere that is pleasant and safe.

Even though the original video has already been removed from TikTok, reuploads of the post are still making their way across the platform, and replies to the tape continue to rack up millions of views.
