Minnesota’s Gun Control Law Puts Cannabis Consumers in the Crosshairs!

An organization overseeing weapons use issued a warning the day after Minnesota legalized marijuana for recreational use, informing users that it is illegal to own firearms or ammunition.

The explanation was released by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (AFT) field office in St. Paul, Minnesota, on Tuesday, not long after Governor Tim Walz (D) authorized the use of recreational marijuana.

According to the clarification, it is illegal for people currently using marijuana to own, receive, transport, or ship firearms or ammunition.

Jeff Reed said, the acting special agent in charge of the ATF’s St. Paul Field Division, “Until marijuana is legalized federally, firearms owners and possessors should be mindful that it remains federally illegal to mix marijuana with firearms and ammunition.”

“As regulators of the firearms industry and enforcers of firearms laws, we felt it was important to remind Minnesotans of this distinction as the marijuana laws adjust here in the State of Minnesota.” 

Between 2007 and 2016, approximately 40% of Minnesotans reported possessing a gun, according to research by the RAND Corporation. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that in 2019, 18% of Americans reported consuming marijuana.

The organization explained gun applicants must declare on their applications if they consume marijuana. The government also stated that people who use marijuana for medical reasons are not exempt from this rule.

Tuesday marked the full legalization of marijuana in Minnesota, making it the 23rd state in the union to do so. As of August 1st, those over 21 can carry up to 2 ounces of marijuana and have 2 pounds at home.
