Mark Goddard, whose birth name was Charles Harvey Goddard, died on Tuesday, October 10, 2023. He was 87 years old. Mark starred in a number of television series, but his role as Major Don West in the CBS series Lost in Space is his most well-known.
Mark, who was born in Lowell, Massachusetts, and reared in Scituate, was the youngest of five siblings. After only three weeks in Hollywood in 1959, he was cast in the CBS television series Johnny Ringo. Soon after, he was cast in The Detectives’ ensemble cast.
Mark starred alongside Liza Minnelli in the 1978 Broadway musical The Act and starred in the 1978 films Roller Boogie and Blue Sunshine. His roles as Ted Clayton on One Life to Live, Lt. Paul Reed on The Doctors, and Derek Barrington on General Hospital were immensely popular.
In the 1998 reboot of Lost in Space, he made a cameo appearance as the general in command of the Jupiter Mission and Major Don West’s superior. Mark returned to school 30 years after graduating from college.
He earned a master’s degree in education from Bridgewater State College, specializing in special education, and taught special education for nearly twenty years at the F.L. Chamberlain School in Middleboro, Massachusetts.
Mark and his wife Evelyn enjoyed traveling during their retirement, visiting nearly 40 countries in Europe, Asia, Africa, and South America. They also shared a firm faith and served as Stephen Ministers at Holy Family Church in Duxbury for over five years.
Mark enjoyed practicing sports as a child and followed the Patriots, Celtics, Bruins, and Red Sox avidly over the years. He enjoyed playing cribbage with his peers as well. According to Evelyn, he was especially gifted at making others feel special and making them chuckle. His generosity and wit will be greatly mourned by many.

Mark is survived by his wife, Evelyn Pezzulich, and their son, John, in addition to his children Melissa and Michael (from his first marriage to Marcia Rogers) and Catherine and Caleb (from his second marriage to actress Susan Anspach); grandchildren Nicholas, Henry, Hugh, and Sophie; and siblings June and Patricia.
His parents Clarence and Ruth (Delaronde) Goddard and siblings James and Verdella predeceased him. The Funeral Mass will be held at the Holy Family Parish Church of Duxbury on Saturday, October 21, 2023, at 10:00 a.m., preceded by a viewing from 9:00 to 9:45 a.m.
