Predictions For The M2 Max and M2 Pro Mac Books In 2022

Apple is likely to update the 14- and 16-inch 2021 MacBook Pro with its first update soon. So far this is what we think will happen with the M2 Pro chip and M2 Max chip MacBook Pro notebooks.

Does This Look Like An Email?

Have you ever been to a meeting when an email would have been better? This year’s MacBook Pro/iPad Pro event might be like that.

Mark Gurman at Bloomberg has been dropping hints for the last two weeks that Apple probably won’t have a second fall event this year. Instead, Apple could just tell a few tech journalists about the new machines and send out a press release.

Part of the reason for this is that the big upgrade to these Macs is mostly just faster versions of the same thing. That doesn’t mean you can’t make changes to the outside, though.

Update: On October 18, 2022, Apple sent out a press release about new iPads and an Apple TV 4K. This means that there will be no event. Mark Gurman also says that MacBook Pros could come out in November.

2022 MacBook Pro Colors?

The most prudent bet would be to anticipate the return of the space grey and silver MacBook Pro color options. However, since the previous batch of MacBook Pros was released, there have been several noteworthy developments. Midnight was Apple’s name for the darker metal finish that they introduced in June.

This bluish-black color of metal has only been seen on one other laptop so far, and that is the MacBook Air.

It would be the first-midnight notebook to have an all-black keyboard if the MacBook Pro appeared in the new hue, which would make it look both newer and more modern. This would be a fantastic alternative to silver and space grey, while many people are still waiting for an all-black MacBook Pro to be released.

Customers who had purchased a MacBook Pro the previous year were similarly dissatisfied with the fact that the USB-C MagSafe 3 cable was only available in white and silver. It is a perfect color match for the silver MacBook Pro, but consumers with the space grey model will need to look elsewhere.

Since then, Apple has introduced USB-C to MagSafe 3 cables in space grey, starlight and midnight, all of which have color-matching. With this update, it is almost certain that Apple will package the space grey variant together with the space grey MacBook Pros.

The M2 update for iPad Pro does not include Midnight as of today (October 18). The future looks bleak for a Midnight MacBook Pro in light of this.

M2 Pro and M2 Max

Last but not least, the internal motivation behind the improvement is the primary factor. Alongside the 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pros that were released in October 2021, Apple also unveiled its M1 Pro and M1 Max CPUs. In the spring of 2016, the business continued to keep the Apple silicon upgrade train moving forwards by releasing the even more powerful M1 Ultra.

Then, in June, Apple released the MacBook Air, which marked the beginning of the company’s M2 product cycle. The performance improvement from M1 to M2 in the new MacBook Pros is presumably going to be the same, but it will be ramped up even further for the Pro and Max models. Yes, this could mean increased participation from fans to avoid throttling. That is something that has not yet been decided.

Customers of the M1 Max model probably won’t need this update from year to year unless they are trying to squeeze every last bit of performance out of their MacBook Pro. If you purchased an M1 Pro in the previous year and are now ready to upgrade to a Max flavor instead, the M2 Max is your opportunity.

Mark Gurman, who works for Bloomberg, has underlined that the primary focus of these new chips will be on the performance of graphics.

More:

Our expectations for the upcoming MacBook Pros include the following.

  • 16-inch MacBook Pro fast charging over USB-C; this wasn’t quite possible with the M1 Pro/Max version.
  • More RAM? Apple increased the RAM limit for the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro with M2.
  • Center Stage webcam? Probably not, especially after the Studio Display hoopla.
  • M2 Ultra version? Don’t hold your breath. Ultra is essentially two Max chips, and that kind of performance would probably chew through battery life.
  • Speaking of battery life and performance, High Power Mode on the M1 Max 16-inch MacBook Pro cranks up graphics-intensive tasks. Maybe we’ll see this feature come to more versions of the new MacBook Pro.

Stay tuned as we anticipate hearing the fate of the M2 Pro and M2 Ultra 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pros either through a press release or at an upcoming Apple event.
