The church declared that the official cause of death was pneumonia complications. Pneumonia is a lung infection that causes inflammation and fluid buildup in the lungs’ air sacs, making breathing difficult.

The church also announced that a private funeral service for Ballard would be held at the Salt Lake Tabernacle on November 18, 2023 and that it would be streamed live on the church’s website and social media channels.
President Russell M. Nelson, the church’s president, would preside over the event, which would include tributes from Ballard’s family and other apostles.
