The British detective drama Grantchester airs on ITV and is set in the eponymous village of Cambridgeshire in the 1950s. Anglican vicar Sidney Chambers (James Norton) and later vicar William Davenport (Tom Brittney) both appear in the episode and become amateur detectives with the help of DI Geordie Keating (Robson Green). Inspired by James Runcie’s short story collections, the show is titled The Grantchester Mysteries.
The first season, which aired in 2014, was adapted from the first book, Sidney Chambers and the Shadow of Death, which collected together six short stories. A second season aired in March and April of 2016, and a third season premiered on April 23, 2017. On April 12, 2018, it was revealed that a fourth season would be airing, and it was said that this would be the final season to star James Norton.
In the fourth season, Tom Brittney’s character, the Reverend Will Davenport, replaced Norton as the show’s protagonist. In January of 2020, production on the fifth season officially began. The production of the sixth season was ordered on July 17, 2020, and debuted on September 3, 2021.
After being renewed for a seventh season on July 28, 2021, filming on that season’s episodes began in the summer of 2021 with Brittney directing for the first time. The series debuted on March 11 and ended on April 15 of that same year (2022). It was revealed in August of 2022 that ITV had ordered an eighth season of the drama, which would premiere in 2023.
Grantchester Plot
Anglican vicar and former Scots Guards officer Sidney Chambers (James Norton), and later his successor Will Davenport (Tom Brittney), form an unlikely partnership with the overworked Detective Inspector Geordie Keating (Robson Green) to solve crimes in the Cambridgeshire village of Grantchester during the 1950s.
Chambers’ more intuitive methods of eliciting information from witnesses and suspects are complemented by Keating’s stern, analytical approach to police. Subplots explore Leonard Finch’s homosexuality before the decriminalization of the same in England and Wales (1967).
