A Tesla Inc. factory that is planned to be built in Mexico’s northern border state of Nuevo Leon will be constructed on a site that spans several thousand acres, which is almost twice the size of its factory site in Texas. Construction on the factory is scheduled to begin in three months, according to a Mexican official who made the announcement on Thursday.
In an interview, Jesus Nava, the mayor of Santa Catarina, which is located in the state of Nuevo Leon, stated that Tesla is planning to purchase the land from its current private owners. According to him, the area is located in an industrial zone and encompasses almost 4,200 acres, which is more than double the size of Mexico City’s international airport.
According to Tesla’s official website, the manufacturing facility in Austin, Texas, which is one of the three extant Tesla automobile facilities, has 2,500 acres of land. When the company finally breaks ground on the Nuevo Leon factory, which it hopes to accomplish in three months, Tesla will announce the vehicles that will be produced there, according to Nava.
Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, made the announcement on Wednesday, a day after Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador stated that Tesla would construct an assembly factory in northern Mexico. A request for a comment on Nava’s statements from Thursday was sent to Tesla, but the company did not immediately answer.
Nava stated that Tesla will initially invest approximately $5 billion and recruit approximately 5,000 people for the project, but that ultimately the company will invest a total of $10 billion and hire up to 10,000 people for the endeavor.
“This will bring a great economic spillover,” Nava said, noting that auto industry suppliers have already been expanding their presence in the area, which has ample industrial space. The federal government of Mexico has stated that the plant will be the largest electric vehicle manufacturer in the world.
The production facility will be located in the Santa Catarina municipality, which is close to Monterrey, one of the largest cities in Mexico. This will place it just a few hours south of the border between the United States and Mexico. According to a senior Mexican official, the “gigafactory” will produce approximately 1 million vehicles annually, which would represent almost a third of Tesla’s capacity across the globe.
