“I was thinking today; I was lying in the Potomac river,” she said. “I love getting to swim in water where I’m playing. It makes me feel like I know you”—the rest of the sentence obscures what sounds like audience laughter and general confusion.

Perfectly fine to swim. It’s not as polluted as it’s made out to be. Most of it is from agricultural runoff further downstream from dc & as a result there are recommended limits to the amount of certain species of fish you should eat – but it’s otherwise a very sanitary waterway

Others in the nation’s capital would like to see the swimming prohibition lifted after more than half a century, even though many residents of the area are repulsed by the idea of having any contact with the Potomac beyond occasional viewing. Advocate tells Washingtonian this past spring, “It’s clean 350 days a year.”
When asked whether it had urged Kiwis not to go swimming in the Potomac, the New Zealand embassy did not immediately comment.
