Targaryen ancestry can be traced back to Aegon I Targaryen, the first ruler of the Targaryen dynasty. During the War of Conquest, he led an invasion force led by his three great dragons and a lesser army led by his sister-wives Visenya and Rhaenys to conquer and unite six of Westeros’ seven kingdoms. Here in this post, you will read about who is Aegon Targaryen?
Dorne was the only region to successfully resist the Targaryens, and its guerrilla warfare against the conquering house began under the leadership of Meria Martell (also known as “The Yellow Toad”) and lasted for two centuries until Maron Martell agreed to marry Daenerys Targaryen, a princess of the Targaryen family, and his sister Myriah Martell married King Daeron II Targaryen.
House of the Dragon
Four statues stand in the Red Keep’s Great Hall, and one of them is of Aegon. Daemon admits to his brother that he slashed the statue of the Conqueror when they were taken before Viserys on the Iron Throne.
It was not ambition that drove Aegon to conquer the Seven Kingdoms, but rather a dragon dream he named “The Song of Ice and Fire,” which Viserys reveals to his daughter Rhaenyra when he chooses her as his heir. Aegon predicted that the White Walkers and the Great War would return and that the only way to stop them would be for a unified Westeros to be ruled by a Targaryen.
Game of Thrones
While in the throne room of the Red Keep, Sansa receives a history lesson from Septa Mordane. There is a reference to Aegon the Conqueror, who is said to have created the Iron Throne and united the Seven Kingdoms.
Aegon’s invasion of Westeros and unification of six of the Seven Kingdoms (Dorne was not added to the realm until some time later) are discussed by Daenerys and Jorah Mormont in Vaes Dothrak.
Jorah explains that Aegon did not have a legal claim to most of Westeros when he conquered it and that he took control of the Seven Kingdoms simply because he could. Daenerys says he was able to because of his dragons. Jorah doubts Aegon had dragons, implying that the events are so distant that certainty is out of the question.
Who Is Aegon Targaryen?
During the Conquest, Aegon I Targaryen, commonly known as Aegon the Conqueror and Aegon the Dragon, overthrew six of the Seven Kingdoms and ascended to the Iron Throne. The Targaryen dynasty of Westeros was established by the dragonlord.
Appearance and Personality
Aegon stood at a commanding six feet and had a wide chest, deep purple eyes, and short silvery-gold hair. He exuded authority and charm in equal measure. During the Conquest, he was known for going into battle wearing a tunic composed of black scales and brandishing Blackfyre, a bastard blade forged from Valyrian steel. His headpiece was a plain Valyrian steel circlet with four large square-cut rubies.
Even among his contemporaries, Aegon was mysterious. Orys Baratheon, commonly believed to be his bastard half-brother, was his lone friend and companion. The king was a skilled warrior, but he never participated in tournaments and only used his dragon, Balerion, for combat and travel.
Aegon was faithful to his sisters and left government in their hands and only took authority when required. While he was severe with those who defied him, he was gracious to those that bent the knee.
History
The Beginnings
Aegon was born to Lord Aerion Targaryen and Lady Valaena Velaryon on Dragonstone in the year 27 BC. Visenya was his older sibling, and Rhaenys was his younger. Aegon followed Valyrian and Targaryen’s custom by marrying within the family; nevertheless, he took both of his sisters as wives, rather than just one.
He is said to have married Visenya out of obligation (she was his older sister, and he needed to marry her to guarantee his inheritance) and Rhaenys out of love. When Aegon was still single, he had already claimed the dragon Balerion as his own.
Aegon, Lord of Dragonstone, met with Prince Pentos and the city’s magisters atop Balerion after they pleaded for his help in their fight against Volantis. Afterward, Aegon took to the air again and headed for Lys, where he destroyed an invading fleet of Volantene ships with a torch. Aegon got back to Dragonstone not long after that.
Early Reign
According to Aegon, his reign began in Oldtown on the day he was crowned by the High Septon. Instead of establishing his capital in Oldtown or Dragonstone, Aegon decided to establish his rule from the new city of King’s Landing, which had developed around the Aegonfort. In addition, he used his foes’ swords to create the Iron Throne.
Along with appointing Lord Orys Baratheon as his first Hand, Aegon established the tiny council and the office of King’s Hand. The King’s Peace, the first statute of Aegon’s kingdom, forbade all fighting within its borders without prior approval from the Iron Throne.
Aegon respected the defeated lords and permitted each region to have its unique laws and customs, as well as allowing the lords to keep their rights to the first night and the pit and gallows. Six masters accompanied Aegon on his travels throughout the realm, enlightening him about the culture and history of each area they visited.
The lords of the Three Sisters declared independence and crowned Lady Marla Sunderland’s queen during Aegon’s Conquest. After being crowned at Oldtown, King Aegon gave orders to the newly appointed Warden of the North, Lord Torrhen Stark, to put down the rebellion.
First Dornish War
In 3 A.C., Aegon once again focused on Dorne, the last independent kingdom. He first planned to try and bring Dorne under the control of the Iron Throne through diplomacy, after a year of negotiations and no progress to show for it though, Aegon decided to capture Dorne by force of war.
In 4 AC Aegon launched a second invasion, continuing the Wars of Conquest. Though initially, the conquest of Dorne seemed to triumph, it unraveled swiftly and the First Dornish War continued and lasted for nine years, and knew many losses and sorrows.
The Dragon’s Progeny
Aegon’s younger sister-wife Rhaenys gave birth to their first child, a son named Aenys, in 7 AC. Aenys, however, was a weak youngster, and the loss of Rhaenys in 10 AC devastated him. There were fears that Aenys would not make it, and Aegon’s desperation mounted. There were whispers that a singer, not Aegon, was Aenys’ biological father because of his problematic health. The rumors stopped spreading after Aenys formed a bond with his dragon Quicksilver and began to feel better.
Since Visenya still hadn’t conceived by then, there was talk at court that Aegon might marry again if Aenys’s health continued to deteriorate. Many lords and knights sent their young daughters to court, despite the fact that Aegon would not express his opinion on the topic. Visenya, Queen of the Veps, became pregnant with Aegon’s second son, Maegor, in 11 B.C.
Death
Aegon took his last journey through Westeros in 33 AC, and while there, he paid a visit to Winterfell. After that, Prince Aenys and his wife Alyssa took over the developments on behalf of Aegon.
Aegon suffered a stroke in 37 AC on Dragonstone while regaling his two eldest grandchildren, Aegon and Viserys, with tales of his victories at the Painted Table. After Aegon’s death, Vhagar lit his funeral pyre on fire on Dragonstone. Blackfyre was also sacrificed beside him but was rescued by Maegor from the flame.
