Tina Turner Career Beginnings
Tina first saw Ike Turner and the Kings of Rhythm play when she and her sister started going out to bars in St. Louis. Soon enough, her singing abilities were recognized by Ike, and she was promoted to lead singer. Ike penned “A Fool in Love” for vocalist Art Lassiter in 1960.
After Lassiter was late to the recording session, Ike had Tina take the lead vocals since he had already paid for the studio time. He had planned to use the song as a demo, but local DJ Dave Dixon urged him to send it to Juggy Murray, head of R&B company Sue Records.
Murray was so taken with the song that he paid Ike a $25,000 advance to purchase the songwriting rights. Ike then trademarked the name “Tina Turner” after he had given it to Tina as a stage name.
Tina Turner Music Career
In July of 1960, Tina and her husband Ike released their debut single “A Fool in Love” under the duet Ike & Tina Turner. It shot to the top of the Hot R&B Sides chart and eventually peaked at number 27 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Ike and Tina’s second 1961 collaboration was the rock and roll standard “It’s Gonna Work Out Fine,” which was nominated for a Grammy. Between 1960 and 1962, they also had the hit singles “I Idolize You,” “Poor Fool,” and “Tra La La.”

Ike travelled the country with his band, the Ike & Tina Turner Revue, which featured Tina Turner, the Kings of Rhythm, and a girl group named the Ikettes. Ike’s record label Sonja Records issued Tina’s debut solo single, “Too Many Ties That Bind/We Need an Understanding” (1964).
The two artists went on to sign with more than a dozen record labels after their tenure at Sue Records ended, including Kent, Cenco, Tangerine, Pompeii, A&M, and Minit. In 1964, they inked a deal with Warner Bros.’s offshoot label Loma Records.
The producer Phil Spector gave them their big break by having them perform in his concert film The Big T.N.T. Show (1966). After hearing their performance, Spector offered them a contract to collaborate. After that, the song “River Deep – Mountain High” (1966) was published on Spector’s Philles record label.
Their 1971 rendition of “Proud Mary,” which won the Grammy for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group, was just one of several successful tracks they released to widespread acclaim. Both “Tina Turns the Country On!” (1974) and “The Gospel According to Ike & Tina” (1974) were nominated for Grammys.
Their marriage and professional partnership broke down in the late 1970s, leading to Tina’s divorce petition in 1978 and the beginning of her solo career.
