Because of the organization’s stance on abortion rights and marriage between people of the same gender, a restaurant in Richmond, Virginia, declined the opportunity to hold a private event for a conservative Christian organization.
The restaurant, which called itself Metzger Bar and Butchery, referred to itself as an “inclusive” establishment that has rarely refused service to willing patrons. However, the restaurant stated that it did not provide service to the group in question to protect its staff, the majority of whom are either members of the LGBTQ+ community or women.
In a recent post on Instagram, the business explained why it decided to deny service to a group that had booked an event with them: “Recently, we refused service to a group that had booked an event with us after the owners of Metzger found out it was a group of donors to a political organization that seeks to deprive women and LGBTQ+ persons of their basic human rights in Virginia.”
According to the article, the decision was made out of respect for Metzger’s employees and was in keeping with the company’s standard operating procedures.
According to what was written in the post, the decision was made because “we have always refused service to anyone for making our workers uncomfortable or dangerous and this was the motivating force behind our decision.” Everyone who works here is a person with rights and deserves to be treated with dignity and have a place of employment that is free from danger.
In addition, it stated that one of its goals is to create a working environment in which its employees “can perform their duties with dignity, comfort, and safety.”
In a subsequent post on Instagram, the restaurant expressed gratitude to its customers for continuing to support the business in the wake of the tragedy. Metzger’s included an image of a cocktail with the moniker “Cracks in the Foundation” and stated that it will contribute all of the sales revenues to Equality Virginia, which is a group that advocates for the equality of LGBTQ people.
