With their 3-1 win over Brighton at the Etihad Stadium, Manchester City tied a 91-year-old top-flight record. Erling Haaland scored twice to help them get there.
The city was going for their 10th straight win at home in the Premier League. They’ve scored at least three goals in all of them, which is something no team has done since Aston Villa did it in 1930 and 1931, also throughout two seasons.
Haaland has scored 17 goals in 11 league games, with 12 of them coming in his last five home games. But captain Kevin de Bruyne scored the best goal of the day. He took an inside pass from Bernardo Silva and curled a great shot into the top corner from 25 yards out.
It put an end to Brighton’s hopes of coming back after Leandro Trossard scored from the corner of the box in the second half. So far, Brighton’s new coach, Roberto de Zerbi, hasn’t led them to a win, while Pep Guardiola’s team is getting close to being just one point behind the league leaders, Arsenal.
Haaland, The Scoreboard
Since the previous weekend, when he played at Liverpool and was unable to score, Haaland had been on a dry spell that spanned two hours without a goal for him.
His opening statement emphasized how quick he is, as well as his power and knowledge. Ederson, the goalkeeper for City, should receive a lot of praise for playing a long ball from his penalty area over the top of the defense for Brighton.
Haaland raced out of his own goal and beat Seagulls goalkeeper Robert Sanchez to the ball, which he then used to put it out of Sanchez’s reach. Then, after pushing Adam Webster out of the way, he rolled the ball into an empty net after first knocking Webster to the ground.
It meant that Haaland’s record for the greatest period without scoring in the Premier League remained at 148 minutes. Soon after that, he scored another one by converting the penalty kick that was awarded to him when the video assistance referee stopped the game to decide that Lewis Dunk had fouled Silva.
That goal was Pep Guardiola’s 600th as manager of Manchester City, a figure attained in six and a half years that had been filled with several trophies, the most recent of which being City being named “Club of the Year” at the Ballon d’Or awards ceremony.
For City, not everything worked out well. Riyad Mahrez, who had been set up by Kevin de Bruyne, squandered a golden opportunity to put them up by three goals shortly before the goal scored by Brossard. As his spot on the team was taken by Phil Foden, the Algerian appeared decidedly unimpressed by the event.
During the stoppage in play, Aymeric Laporte needed medical attention for an injury, and the injury may prevent him from playing on Tuesday in the Champions League match against Borussia Dortmund.
Brighton Complaints
Brighton was unhappy with both of City’s first-half goals. Webster was still complaining to referee Craig Pawson at halftime that Haaland messed with him when he scored the first goal, and Webster’s central defender partner, Dunk, said that Silva kicked him, not Webster when the penalty was given.
Both calls were questionable, and visiting teams need those kinds of calls to go their way if they want to leave Etihad Stadium with anything.
When Graham Potter left Brighton for Chelsea, they were in fourth place in the table, but it was clear that was a false position because they had some tough games coming up. Still, De Zerbi now has two points from five games in charge before Potter comes back to the Amex Stadium on Saturday.
The Italian has made some small changes to Potter’s team. He wants Moises Caicedo and Alexis Mac Allister to get on the ball more often in midfield, but Brighton is falling back into its old habit of not scoring enough goals.
The goal Trossard wanted to reach was a guess. But he missed Brighton’s best chance to tie the game when he ran into the box and tried to beat Ederson from an impossible angle instead of trying to find a teammate in the middle.
