According to the police, a 15-year-old girl was shot and murdered during an attempted armed robbery in St. Charles on Saturday night. Her name has not been released.
About 8:50 p.m., officers from the St. Charles Police Department responded to a report of shots fired at St. Joseph’s Hospital. Lydia Elking and a teenage boy, both of whom were apparently robbed by two individuals in the vicinity of Oak Avenue and Perry Street, were found by the police officers in the location in question.
On Monday, the police department in St. Louis County said that two teenage boys, ages 16 and 17, had been brought into custody. Both are being prosecuted as juveniles for murder in the second degree, armed robbery in the first degree, first degree assault, and criminal action with a weapon. Both are going to take place in the county of St. Charles. According to the police, the weapon that is thought to have been used in the shooting was recovered from a residence in St. Charles.
According to the statements made by the victims to the police, they were approached by two teenagers who then announced a robbery and brought out a handgun. They then shot into the vehicle, hitting the 15-year-old boy. The victim, who was 17 years old, told the investigators that they had been instructed to meet in the vicinity of where the incident took place. It is not yet clear what the explanation for this is.
Lt. Tom Wilkison with St. Charles Police Department said
“So it’s not a random act of violence these people were directed there, and that matter is still actively being investigated”
A doorbell camera footage that was provided to News 4 by a neighbor on Saturday evening reveals that there was a gunshot fired shortly after 8:30 p.m. You can then see someone dash across Perry street and disappear into the shadows behind some houses not long after that.
On the same footage, two people can be seen approaching the scene of the shooting a few minutes before the sound of gunfire can be heard. The video’s owner stated that she had also provided the clip to the St. Charles Police Department.
The victim, who was 17 years old, drove himself to the hospital and reported the crime to the authorities there. Elking succumbed to her injuries and died at the hospital. Sunday, police were reportedly gathering further information by interviewing with the victim, who was 17 years old.
The event took place on a street that many people believe to be relatively peaceful. “It’s a very friendly, safe place,” said Christie Selvidge, whose mother lives in the neighborhood. Several of the locals in the area told us that this isn’t the first time a shooting has taken place close to that intersection, and one of them even showed us a bullet hole from an earlier incident.
