LaTocha Scott’s musical journey began at a young age. She was just 6 years old when she started singing in church and performing at weddings. Formation of Xscape:
LaTocha and her sister, Tamika, crossed paths with Kandi Burruss during their high school years. The three talented young women decided to join forces and began singing together.
Prior to this, LaTocha had been part of a group called Precise. Eventually, they decided to expand their group and added a fourth member, Tamera Coggins. However, Tamera’s tenure in the group was short-lived, and she was replaced by Tameka “Tiny” Cottle after auditioning successfully. With the final lineup in place, the R&B group Xscape was officially formed.
In 1992, Xscape made their debut performance on BET’s Teen Summit, marking the beginning of their journey to stardom. During their Teen Summit performance, the group caught the attention of record executive Ian Burke, who would later become their manager. They were subsequently signed to Jermaine Dupri’s record label, So So Def Recordings.
Musical Success with Xscape:
Xscape’s first album, “Hummin’ Comin’ at ‘Cha,” was released in October 1993 and achieved massive success, peaking at No. 17 on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart and earning platinum certification within a year. In 1995, they followed up with their second studio album, “Off the Hook.”
The group experienced a change in management in 1997, and the following year, they released their third album, “Traces of My Lipstick.” The album featured two hit songs, “My Little Secret” and “The Arms of the One Who Loves You,” which earned LaTocha Scott and Jermaine Dupri an ASCAP Rhythm and Soul Music Award.
Solo Career and Beyond:
In 1999, LaTocha Scott decided to leave Xscape as the group’s dynamics shifted following the release of their third album. She shifted her focus to her solo career, releasing her debut solo track titled “Promises” in 1998.
During the early 2000s, LaTocha ventured into her solo career and signed a record deal with Sony Urban after reuniting with her former manager, Michael Mauldin. However, her debut album with Sony Urban was not released, leading to her departure from the label. In 2002, she collaborated with rapper Trick Daddy on his song “Thug Holiday.”
LaTocha Scott made her mark as a solo artist and, in 2023, released her first gospel album, “The Invitation: A Conversation With Gold,” via Motown Gospel/Capitol CMG. Prior to the album’s release, she unveiled the lead single, “Stay With Me.” In addition to her music career, LaTocha appeared on the second season of TV One’s reality series, “R&B Divas: Atlanta,” in 2013.
