Lady Gaga Joins The Joker Sequel

A Chromatica Ball, then a pas-de-deux of psychosexuality. A sequel to Todd Phillips’ Oscar-winning movie The Joker, Joker: Folie à Deux, will star Lady Gaga alongside Joaquin Phoenix. In a video posted to her official Twitter account, Lady Gaga revealed the casting.

The jazz standard “Cheek to Cheek” is played in the background as the silhouettes of Phoenix and Gaga dance over a red background. While Phoenix is heard laughing in the background above the title card, the two figures dance together. The film’s scheduled release date of October 4th, 2024 is revealed in the final frame.

Over $1.07 billion was earned globally by The Joker, making it the most grossing R-rated film ever. It was nominated for 11 Oscars and won two: for Phoenix and the composer Hildur Gudnadottir, who took home the award for best score for his work.

For his role as Arthur Fleck, the unstable standup comic and professional clown who eventually morphs into the titular DC villain, Phoenix received his second best actor Oscar. Todd Phillips, the director of Joker, posted a picture of Phoenix reading the finished script for Folie à Deux on Instagram in June.

A musical sequel has been predicted and considering Gaga’s casting, it appears to be the case. In 2019, she won an Oscar for best original song for “Shallow” from A Star Is Born, which she also appeared in and produced. In the same year, she was nominated for a Golden Globe for her work as an actress.

News of Gaga’s appointment comes during a terrible week for Warner Bros and DC, which announced that it was abandoning the $90 million, nearly finished Batgirl project and withdrawing six original movies from its HBO Max streaming channel. Maybe the struggling studio needs a Gaga and Phoenix supervillain musical after all.
