In response to the rapidly developing artificial intelligence (AI) industry, the Information Technology Program at the Viterbi School of Engineering has introduced a new minor in the application of artificial intelligence. At the beginning of the semester that began in Fall 2022, the minor became available to all students.
Nitin Vasant Kale, a professor in the fields of information technology, practice and industrial, and systems engineering practice, came up with the idea for the minor program after realizing the enormous commercial potential of artificial intelligence. The program’s goals are to educate students about AI, enhance their studies in their majors, and investigate potential career paths.
According to Kale, “we hope that our students will be able to use AI and use AI in many different businesses, which we don’t even know about today because this field is growing so quickly.” “[For instance, AI] might be employed in the medical area, in detecting risk factors for particular diseases or the transmission of viruses,” according to one possible application of AI.
According to Kale, the course plan for the minor was developed to educate students who come from a wide variety of academic fields and backgrounds.

Core requirements for the program include classes like “Programming in Python,” “Introduction to Data Analytics,” and “Basics of Artificial Intelligence,” which teach students the basics of making AI. Prospective students can take an “Applied Artificial Intelligence” course to get them interested in the AI application minor.
“I think that anyone interested in AI should sign up for these classes. “One thing I like about it is that it focuses on real-world experiences and application, so you can actually learn things and use them in the real world, like at work, and it prepares you well,” said Kelly Gee, a junior majoring in intelligence and cyber operations who plans to declare a minor in AI applications.

Gee said that the chance to build a career in AI is one of the main reasons she wants to declare a minor in AI application.
Gee said, “Right now, I’m interested in digital forensics in the cyber field.” “AI and cybersecurity have a lot of potential because we could make different machine learning algorithms and other things to speed up the process and maybe even automate threat detection to help us stop cybersecurity problems faster.”
Since the program started, it has gotten a lot of attention. Some students even wish they had signed up for the minor when they had the chance.
“I have a minor in applied analytics right now. But if I were a sophomore and could choose this minor, I probably would because it covers ethics and is more focused on AI. Greg Xu, a senior majoring in philosophy, politics, and economics, said, “I think it will be much more useful than my current minor.”
At the moment, there are seven students in the minor. Kale said that he is hopeful about the program’s future and wants to see it grow.”I hope we will have about 20 students in the first year and grow from there,” Kale said.
