Mary had played softball way back in the 1930s, and Richard worked for the U.S. Department of Agriculture as a soil conservation agent. At Natrona County High School in Casper, where he also attended College View Elementary School (now Calvert Elementary School) in Lincoln, Dick served as both the senior class president and captain of the football team.

After high school, Cheney enrolled at Yale University, but she departed less than two years later due to her subpar academic standing. After graduating from Yale, he was arrested twice for driving while intoxicated in 1962 and 1963.

Cheney is a United Methodist Church member and the first Methodist vice president to serve under a Methodist president. Cheney’s brother Bob was a civil servant with the Bureau of Land Management.

His wife Lynne was chair of the National Endowment for the Humanities from 1986 to 1996. She is a writer, public speaker, and senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute at the moment.

The couple has two daughters, Elizabeth (“Liz”) and Mary Cheney, and seven grandkids. Liz is the spouse of Philip J. Perry, a former Wyoming congressman and general counsel of the Department of Homeland Security.

Mary worked as a campaign aide for the Bush reelection campaign. She and her spouse Heather Poe reside in Great Falls, Virginia. She used to work for the Colorado Rockies baseball team and the Coors Brewing Company.

From 1969 to 1970, Cheney worked for Donald Rumsfeld at the Office of Economic Opportunity. After that, he served as the Cost of Living Council’s assistant director and, in the years that followed, as a staff assistant in the White House.

After working as the President’s deputy assistant during Gerald Ford’s presidency, Cheney became the Chief of Staff of the White House and the President’s assistant. He was also the manager of Ford’s 1976 presidential campaign.

1979 saw Cheney elected to the US House of Representatives, representing his home state of Wyoming. Re-elected five times, he presided over the House Republican Policy Committee from 1981 to 1987.

In 1989, Cheney resigned from the House of Representatives to become Secretary of Defense under George H.W. Bush, a position he held until 1993. The House Minority Whip at the time was Cheney in 1988.

As Secretary of Defense, Dick oversaw the military actions known as Operation Just Cause and Operation Desert Storm. Along with these two awards, he also earned the U.S. Senator John Heinz Award for Greatest Public Service by an Elected or Appointed Official and the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Cheney left the Department of Defense upon the inauguration of Bill Clinton in 1993. For two terms, from 1993 to 1995, Dick served as a director of the Council on Foreign Relations following his employment at the American Enterprise Institute.

1987–1989 marked his first term in office. From 1995 to 2000, Cheney served as CEO and Chairman of the Board of Halliburton, a provider of oilfield services. He allegedly received a $20 million retirement payment from the corporation when he departed in 2000 to join George W. Bush’s administration.

In 2002, shareholders of Halliburton launched a class-action lawsuit alleging securities fraud against the company. The dispute was settled for $100 million in 2016. The corporation agreed to a $250 million settlement, so the Nigerian government withdrew its 2010 accusations of misconduct against Cheney and Halliburton.
