On Wednesday, the People’s Republic of China issued a threat to take legal action against the United States government agencies that were responsible for the destruction of one of its surveillance balloons and its subsequent recovery.
During a news briefing, Wang Wenbin, a spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, made the ominous statement.
“China firmly opposes this and will take countermeasures in accordance with the law against the relevant U.S. entities that undermine China’s sovereignty and security,” said Wang.
In recent weeks, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been extremely critical of the way the United States government has handled the matter. Specifically, the ministry has accused government officials of making a spectacle out of a sensitive subject.

Wang did not explain on what the suggested “countermeasures” might be, but the spokesman assured that the communist nation will “resolutely preserve national sovereignty and its legitimate rights and interests.” Wang did not elaborate on what the proposed “countermeasures” may be.

The surveillance balloons that were shot down by the government of the United States on February 4 over the waters off the coast of South Carolina have been a topic of discussion every day in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
“We do need to point out, however, that the U.S.’s downing of the unmanned airship with advanced missiles is a trigger-happy overreaction,” Wang said in a press conference on Monday. “Many in the U.S. have been asking, ‘What good can such costly action possibly bring to the U.S. and its taxpayers?’”
