Two football players for the Georgia Bulldogs died in a car crash early Sunday, and two others were hurt. This happened just hours after the team celebrated winning back-to-back national titles.
The UGA Athletic Association said that the people who died in the car crash in Athens, Georgia, were 20-year-old offensive lineman Devin Willock and 24-year-old recruiting staff member Chandler LeCroy. The group said that two more people who had been hurt were in stable condition. No one knew who they were right away.
“The entire Georgia family is devastated by the tragic loss of football student-athlete Devin Willock and football staff member Chandler LeCroy. Two other football team members were hurt in the accident. The UGA Athletic Association said in a statement that both of them are in stable condition and that they will continue to be checked on by doctors.”
“Devin and Chandler were two special people who meant so much to the University of Georgia, our football programme and our athletic department. We ask that everyone keep their families in your prayers during this very difficult time.”

“The UGA Athletic Association will work with our medical team as well as our mental health and performance personnel to make sure we are providing the best support possible for our staff and student-athletes who are processing this grief. We can provide no further comment at this time but ask everyone continue to keep those involved in your prayers.”
Police say that Willock was a passenger in an SUV that crashed at 2:45 a.m. local time in Athens. Authorities say that the car was in the outside lane of the road when it went off the road and hit two power poles and several trees. FOX 5 Atlanta says that Willock was already dead at the scene. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution says that the driver, LeCroy, was taken to the hospital, where she later died.

Willock, a redshirt sophomore from New Milford, New Jersey, played in every regular season game for the Bulldogs as a backup offensive lineman. He also played in both College Football Playoff games and the SEC Championship. Georgia coach Kirby Smart said something about the deaths of Willock and LeCroy. “We are all heartbroken and devastated with the loss of Devin Willock and Chandler LeCroy,” Smart said in a statement.
“Devin was an outstanding young man in every way and was always smiling. He was a great teammate and a joy to coach. Chandler was a valuable member of our football staff and brought and incredible attitude and energy every single day. We grieve with their families for this tragic loss and will support them in every way possible.”
