Starting with the iPhone X in 2017, Face ID took the place of Touch ID. Since then, there have been rumors that Apple might add Touch ID back to the iPhone, but so far, nothing has come true. Now, a new report from Bloomberg says that even though Apple has tested adding Touch ID back to the iPhone, it’s not likely to happen any time soon.
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman says in the latest issue of his Power On newsletter that Apple has tested Touch ID on the iPhone’s screen and has also thought about putting Touch ID on the power button, like the iPad Air and iPad mini. Even though Apple has tested both of these things, Gurman doesn’t think either will be released “at least shortly.”
Over the past few years, there have been discussions within Apple about bringing Touch ID back to high-end iPhones. The company has tested in-screen Touch ID and even contemplated putting it on the power button. At this point, I believe Face ID is here to stay and Touch ID won’t be returning to flagship iPhones—at least anytime in the foreseeable future
Gurman says that Apple could move Touch ID to the power button on the iPhone SE and other lower-end models. This would be similar to how the iPad has Face ID and Touch ID, but Gurman says he hasn’t heard anything about this happening.

9to5Mac’s Take
I’d love to see Touch ID come back to the iPhone at some point in the future. Face ID has improved a lot over the years, especially now that it works with face masks and in landscape mode. There are still times when being able to use Touch ID would be helpful.
As I’ve said before, having both Face ID and Touch ID on the iPhone is also good for security. For example, you could need both Face ID and Touch ID authentication to get to very sensitive information.
