He joined the West Virginia Mountaineers football team after studying English at West Virginia University from 2009 to 2012. During his freshman year, he became Jarrett Brown’s reserve.

During that season, he completed five of eight passes for 50 yards with one interception and returned to action against Syracuse, Marshall, and Louisville. In his inaugural season, he was named to the All-Big East Conference Second Team in 2010 and the All-Big East Conference First Team in 2011.

He began his professional career in 2013 when the New York Jets selected him with the 39th overall selection in the NFL Draft. In the same year, he dismissed his agency ‘Select Sports Group’ and signed with ROC Nation Sports.

In week nine of his rookie season with the New York Giants, he relieved Eli Manning against the Los Angeles Rams. He inked a one-year contract with the Los Angeles Chargers in April 2018.

With the franchise, he participated in five games, completing a pass for eight yards as the Chargers defeated the Cleveland Browns 38-14 in his debut. On May 15, 2019, following the conclusion of the 2019 season, he signed with the Seattle Seahawks and competed with Paxton Lynch for the backup position behind Russell Wilson. The following day, he resigned and earned the reserve position.
