The Florida death row inmate who was going to be the first person put to death in four years ate his last meal Thursday (Feb 24), hours before he was supposed to die by lethal injection.
Corrections officials said that 59-year-old Donald Dillbeck woke up early and was “calm” and “followed his normal routine.” At 9:45 a.m. he ate his last meal.
Officials said that the meal included fried shrimp, mushrooms, onion rings, ice cream, pecan pie, and chocolate.
The state Department of Corrections says that, to avoid waste, the food used to make the meals can’t cost more than $40 and must be bought in the area.

Dillbeck, who is 59 years old, will be put to death at the Florida State Prison in Raiford at 6 p.m. In 1990, he was found guilty of killing a woman with a knife during a carjacking at a mall in Tallahassee.
He had been in jail for killing a sheriff’s deputy in 1979 and was serving a life sentence. Two days before the stabbing, he broke out of jail.
This will be the first execution in Florida this year and the first since 2019. There are 301 people on death row in the state right now. The U.S. Supreme Court did not stop Dillbeck from being put to death.
