A homicide investigation has been opened following a gunshot that took place close to a high school football championship game on Friday afternoon, according to the Sacramento Police Department. Just before 9 o’clock in the evening, a representative for the department announced that the victim, a male aged 37, had passed away at a local hospital. It marks the city’s first homicide in the past three weeks and the 53rd homicide of the year overall.
The shooting took place just before 4 o’clock in the afternoon in the North City Farms neighborhood on the 4100 block of 23rd Street. The shooting took place one block south of Sacramento City College’s Hughes Stadium, which was hosting a CIF Sac-Joaquin Division III championship football game between Grant Union and Christian Brothers high schools. Later on, authorities were observed investigating a vehicle several blocks to the west in the parking lot of a 76 gas station on Sutterville and Del Rio roads in South Land Park. William Land Park is located directly across the street.
An update provided by the police at nine o’clock stated that “friends of the victim took the victim to a petrol station where an ambulance responded and took the victim to a local hospital.” According to the authorities, no arrests have been made, and there is currently no information on any suspects. Once the victim’s next of kin have been contacted, the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office will make public the identity of the deceased.
The killing is eerily similar to an occurrence that occurred one month ago, when a man died after being shot on October 21 in the parking lot of Grant High School during a home football game for the Pacers. At the time, the victim was 24 years old. It was the city’s 50th homicide of the year at the time of the incident.
On November 4, a guy in his twenties was fatally shot and killed in the 7800 block of Center Parkway, making this the 52nd person to be murdered in the city. In neither investigation have any arrests been made. On Friday, the football game continued without any incidents, and Grant went on to win the Division III title with a score of 20-12.
