Gm Is Spending $760 Million To Build Electric Car Drive Units At A Factory In Toledo

The company has stated that the drive units will be utilized in GM’s electric vehicles, such as the GMC Hummer EV, which is now being manufactured, the Chevrolet Silverado EV, and the GMC Sierra EV, which will be released shortly. It will be the first engine or transmission factory in the United States that GM has modified for production linked to electric vehicles.

An electric motor, a transmission with a single speed, and power electronics are all components of an electric drive unit. These components are responsible for transferring power to and from the electric motor.

(As opposed to gas-powered automobiles, electric vehicles do not need more than one-speed transmission.) GM refused to comment on whether or not the actual motors will be manufactured in the factory in Toledo, Ohio, or elsewhere.

GM spokesman Dan Flores stated that the factory would, at the very least, for the time being, continue to produce transmissions for front-wheel drive and rear-wheel drive gas-powered vehicles in addition to electric drive units.

Gerald Johnson, GM’s executive vice president of Global Manufacturing and Sustainability, stated, “This investment helps provide job stability for our Toledo team for years to come and represents the next step on our journey to an all-electric future.”

GM also invested $2 billion in its facility in Spring Hill, Tennessee, which currently produces the Cadillac Lyriq electric SUV in addition to gasoline-powered models. The firm also makes other vehicles. General Motors has said it plans to invest $35 billion in electric vehicles by 2025.
