No one knew that High School Musical was going to be such a hit, and it was reported that Efron was only paid about $100,000 for the first movie—which is still a ton of money, but small when you consider that HSM became the most commercially successful Disney Channel Original Movie (DCOM) ever produced, with 255 million viewers around the world as of 2019, and the movie was the fastest-selling DVD of a TV movie ever.

When High School Musical 3: Senior Year was published in 2008, Efron received a significant pay raise, with his income fluctuating between $3-5 million.

Efron’s top five cinematic successes over the years have been Doctor Seuss’ The Lorax, High School Musical 3, Neighbors, and Hairspray, with The Greatest Showman earning $439 million worldwide.

In 2008, Efron was ranked 92 on the Forbes Celebrity 100, having earned $5.8 million between June 2007 and June 2008.

In 2010, Efron founded Ninjas Runnin’ Wild, a Warner Bros. production firm that assisted in the production of Dirty Grandpa, That Awkward Moment, and Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil, and Vile.
