The men’s category of THE JOHN SHIPPEN National Golf Invitational presented by Rocket Mortgage was won by Wyatt Worthington II of Reynoldsburg, Ohio, after a final round of seven-under 65 on Sunday at Detroit Golf Club.
To qualify for the PGA TOUR’s Rocket Mortgage Classic (July 26 – 31) in Detroit, Michigan, Worthington II was granted an exemption. Worthington will not be the first time he has competed in a high-level tournament. Prior to this year’s PGA Championship at Southern Hills and the 2016 PGA Championship at Baltusrol, Wyatt competed in the first THE JOHN SHIPPEN.

“Disbelief, tenacity, and toughness, that’s what it needed,” Worthington said of Sunday’s round. Worthington II recorded a 73 in the first round and was five strokes off the lead heading into the final round with Chase Johnson and Everett Whitten Jr. in second place.
With eight birdies in the final round, four of which came on the final nine holes, Worthington II won the championship. One stroke separated him from second-place finisher Michael Herrera, who carded 138 during the round.
To participate in the Rocket Mortgage Classic, Worthington II eagerly awaits. “I’m looking forward to learning more about the ropes. “I’ve worked hard for this opportunity, and I’m eager to put it to the test.”
