On Wednesday, an unattended beach umbrella reportedly impaled a woman in the chest, killing her. Horry County Chief Deputy Coroner Tamara Willard told the press that the wind at about 12:40 p.m. had blown the umbrella loose from its anchoring and that it had struck Tammy Perreault as she was enjoying the beach in Garden City.

According to Willard, Perreault, 63, died of chest trauma about an hour after arriving at the hospital. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission warns that beach umbrellas, which feature a spiked end to help push them into the sand, can become a hazard if they are not properly anchored due to their large canopies and the wind they generate.
There are an estimated 3,000 annual beach umbrella-related injuries, according to the federal agency. After a woman was killed in 2016 by a beach umbrella in Virginia, U.S. Senators Tim Kaine and Mark Warner asked the safety agency to review the safety rules for umbrellas and launch a safety campaign.
